Over Saturday and Sunday alone, French outlets StreetPress, Index and ViolencesPoliciĆØres(dot)fr collected several hundred videos and testimonies. Cases they documented include:
šø A 17-year-old in Saint-Ćtienne whose hand was torn off by a police grenade
šø A 17-year-old girl in Mulhouse who lost the sight in her left eye after being hit by a tear gas grenade
šø Protesters in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg and BesanƧon beaten with batons and kicked while on the ground, including one held in a chokehold
France's police watchdog has opened at least 36 investigations into police violence against high school protesters. Christophe Calvao, president of the Paris Young Lawyers' Union, denounced "an increasingly systematic use of crowd-control measures that would normally be reserved for much more serious situations."
Interior Minister Laurent NuƱez has said police "must be able to use all intermediate weapons," and on Tuesday vowed to "step up" for the next mobilization. France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc MƩlenchon said his party and unions know how to keep marches peaceful by deploying hundreds of volunteers, adding: "We could at least expect police to do something other than fire indiscriminately into the crowd."
Melenchon also noted that most European countries ban such grenades, and that NuƱez suspended them only to reinstate them "not even 48 hours" later.

Iām grieving the deaths of the two Israeli soldiers killed in Hebron today, and praying for the full & speedy recovery of those who were injured.
Iāve spoken out loudly this week against Israelās occupation of the West Bank, which imposes violence on a daily basis, and I will continue to do so. But violence is not the path to ending it ā or to achieving safety, freedom, and peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.
And neither is collective punishment or ethnic cleansing of an entire neighborhood, or punishing millions of people for the criminal act of two, which Netanyahu has promised to enact in response.
Iāve seen a lot this week and Iāll have more to say about in the coming days (Iām on my way home shortly). There is a path to ending this excruciating cycle of violence. It starts by insisting that every life is sacred, that everyone is created in Godās image.
