In 1998, a young trader's boss told everyone on the floor to read @barronsonline every weekend.
That trader, @Ben_levisohn, now runs Barron's. We asked how a story gets chosen and what they are using AI for (and what they will not use it for).
Excitement is expensive. Boring is on sale.
Our next Opportunity Report, out in the coming days:

• net cash balance sheet

In this morning's The Memo for @FOS:
James Dolan banked a $10M bonus for helping separate the Knicks and Rangers into two publicly traded companies.
While execs often receive spin-off bonuses, the $10M award is particularly generous, an expert says.

MSG Knickerbocker Corp up nearly 6% on Day 1. Who knew the Knicks' best performance of the season would come on the NYSE.

“I think buy and hold is a result of an investment strategy, not an investment strategy in and of itself.”
What I told @ReformedBroker and @michaelbatnick on @TheCompound, expanded in our 3Q letter.

Those Madison Square Garden employees got their hopes up at the end of September when the Knicks sent an email to a long list of employees, which gave recipients a first glimpse at their would-be championship rings. Atop the email, a copy of which The Athletic has obtained, was a graphic of two differently styled rings.
“Congratulations, your Employee Championship Ring is here,” the email read.
“(Employee name), this one is on the house. MSG is issuing a complimentary employee championship ring. The same jeweler, the same craftsmanship, personalized with your name. No cost to you.
“There are two designs to choose from: Championship Gold and Garden Classic. Reserve the one you want below.”
But the email was a fake-out, a phishing test Madison Square Garden sent to see if those employees would click, multiple team sources said.
Those who did click the link at the bottom of the message did not get to choose any jewelry; instead, they were forced to attend a mandatory cybersecurity class to help satisfy some of Dolan’s growing cybersecurity concerns, those team sources said.
But Moynihan is no Dimon—and Bank of America is no JPMorgan.
Good article. The contrast on almost every metric with $JPM is pretty astonishing.

Lehman Brothers turned down Leon Black after four rounds of interviews. The reason: “we don’t think you’re smart enough.”
Today Lehman no longer exists. Apollo, the firm Black founded, is worth over $60 billion.
Bestselling author and Founding Partner of @Pucknews @williamcohan tells the story on our latest episode.

Buffett, 1999: “It’s a huge structural advantage not to have a lot of money. I think I could make you 50% a year on $1 million. No, I know I could. I guarantee that.”
He was talking about the part of the market the big institutions can’t own. I spent an episode on how to invest there with @iancassel, founder of MicroCapClub and author of Stock Picker.

One of the great scenes in movie history:
I mean, seriously, how often do you really look at a man's shoes?...
