Guess what!!
New @ABA #BirdOfTheYear just announced!
It's time for my annual ABA Bird of the Year prediction!
The announcement is happening in Nashville. Can we infer the bird will be a Tennessee native? Perhaps.
I feel like it's time for the Belted Kingfisher to take the spotlight.
Let's go, kingfishers! #BirdOfTheYear2023
A special moment I shared with a kingfisher a couple years ago...

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, recently returned to Midway Atoll!
The beloved Laysan albatross, or mōlī, is at least 71 years old. Biologists first identified and banded Wisdom in 1956 after she laid an egg, and the large seabirds aren’t known to breed before age 5.

THE WHOOPING CRANE HATH DECIDED TO GRACE US WITH ITS PRESENCE. THIS 2,500-MILE ONE WAY FLIGHT MAY TAKE AS MANY AS 50 DAYS,
BUT EXPERIENCED PAIRS MAY MAKE THE RETURN TRIP THIS SPRING IN AS LITTLE AS 10.

Ok folks. It’s time we talked about eels.
I’m a geologist but I recently learnt about eels and… wow.
Since then, I’ve been greeting strangers with ‘DO YOU KNOW ABOUT EELS?!’
Well, consider yourself a stranger in my path.
Strap in. It’s a 🧵

Despite the steep decline last year, Maine’s Atlantic Puffins and Common Terns raised chicks at double the rate of last year. @DerrickZJackson visited several seabird nesting islands this year and described what he saw as a “breeding bonanza.” audubon.org/news/after-clima…

A discovery that made me happy: "eyelashes" on Ruby-crowned Kinglets. I recently realized that some of these Kinglets have tiny grey feathers above and below their eyes - the eyelashes - while others have darker grey or black feathers for a bolder look. Never noticed this before!
