Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Dean, a former Mayor of Oldham and longstanding councillor.
Peter was a passionate public servant who dedicated so much of his life to serving Oldham and its communities. On a personal level, I was proud to call Peter a friend, and I will always be grateful for his guidance, support and wisdom over the years.
He will be remembered for his warmth, decency, commitment and many years of service to local people.
My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and all who knew him. Rest in peace, Peter.

While football does not cause domestic abuse, stats show that incidents can spike during major tournaments. The 'Unspoken Stat' is called xV, and that stands for expected violence against women after the game. A study by Lancaster University has shown that domestic abuse incidents can rise by 38% when England lose and 26% even when England win so the xV is a frightening statistic, and we can all help.
Support and information is available from domestic abuse charities @ichoosefreedomcharity & @leedswomensaid or you can call the national domestic abuse helpline number on 0808 2000 #TheUnspokenStat

Lots of Boomers seem to be remembering the summer of 1976 with rose tinted spectacles, & think that they ‘just got in with it’
Let’s have a look at what the newspapers of the day had to say in 1976….

Eu colocava a TV bem baixinha. Tipo, só duas barrinhas de volume. Eu assistia futebol no escuro e sonhava.
Isso me lembra daqueles tempos.
É a nossa tradição.
No Chelsea, Rangers, Olympiacos, Crystal Palace?
Eles nunca me deram uma razão.

The World Cup begins tomorrow, and many will watch the matches. Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget: life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together. Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life. #ApostolicJourney
After the referee blew the whistle to call the game off, players from both Denmark and Ukraine came together in a moment of collective solidarity with Christian Eriksen.

🚨 Pep Guardiola hits back at Jim Ratcliffe: "We treat immigrants or people that come from other countries like they are the ones causing problems for our country. It's a big problem because the fact I am Catalan and you are British? What influence did we have on where we were born?
"Everyone wants to have a better life, everyone wants to have a better future for themselves and their families. Sometimes the opportunities are where you are born and sometimes it is in the place where you go.
"The colour of your skin or the place where you were born don't make a difference.
"Most people run away from their countries for the problems that are in their country, not because they want to leave.
"The more we embrace other cultures, truly embrace it, then we will have a better society - I do not have any doubts about that."
