George Madgwick has posted a statement after being charged. He says he is "innocent of the allegations", has resigned as Reform UK leader on Hampshire Council and will sit as an independent until cleared. He says he will make no further comment and is deactivating his social media.
He's entitled to the presumption of innocence and to a fair trial. The question I'm asking Reform is a separate one: how was he vetted, and what did Farage know.
STATEMENT
I am shocked and dismayed at the charges brought against me.
Whilst the charges are extremely serious, I will say unequivocally that I am innocent of the allegations against me.
Due process must take its course and the legal process must be followed without hindrance.
I considered it responsible to resign as Reform UK leader in Hampshire Council and I will continue as an independent until I’m cleared.
I will not make any further statement now, or in the future, on this in any capacity. I will deactivate my social media shortly until due process has concluded.

BBC still too timid on the prospective UK-EU trade deal on food, drink, lifting phytosanitary checks. Exposes bogus Global Britain rhetoric and empty Truss trade deals, underlines imperative of friction-free trade with nearest neighbours and opportunity for growth. So this is an economic as much as a political story!

This is one of the most dangerous shifts in Yemen since 2015. Houthis are fighting 50 miles from Aden, the interim capital, and the south's main haven for nearly two million Yemenis. Taiz is cut off, leaving the south completely wide open. reuters.com/world/middle-eas…

Writing this in my personal capacity, but I have been flying these types of aircraft for more than 20 years, with over 8,000 hours, and have reasonable familiarity with how the charter world operates. I feel compelled to post after seeing commentary about the Lear 60 crash, from missile strikes to DEI to critiquing this poor woman’s final radio calls.
That last part is what I find most troubling. She was the second-in-command (SIC), and while she was empowered to point out mistakes as part of good crew resource management, she was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation. She likely knew before many of those calls that she was going to die. I have heard final calls from friends, from military pilots with thousands of hours in fighter aircraft, and they are just as heartbreaking because they know the end is approaching.
I understand the public interest given the footage and audio. But you do not know the aircraft’s maintenance history, whether there was a structural failure, if any failure was induced by turbulence, overspeed, or overcontrol, or everything happening in that cockpit. I am sure weather will be part of the investigation, but beyond that, it is speculation. The charter industry routinely hires commercial pilots very early in their careers to gain experience alongside an ATP-qualified captain before they move up to the airlines. She would still have the appropriate training, qualifications, and checkouts by an FAA examiner or designee.
Let people investigate, learn, and share the facts. Be respectful to those who perished and the families who carry their memories. God bless them and their loved ones.

For the past month, Egypt has pursued a historic crackdown on what's left of independent journalism. Unchecked, it's possible the government will continue until they close every remaining independent news outlet in Egypt. International news outlets can help save Egypt's press 🧵

Big difference this time is that diplomacy is being led by third parties, not by America itself
In one sense that is positive, because the effort is more serious. It's not another shambolic Witkoff special
But it also means Iran is talking with parties who can't actually agree to anything
So my concern is less about a ruse and more about a disconnect: Are the mediators actually in sync with what the Trump administration wants? And can they convince the Iranians that they're in sync?

The UN mourns staff deaths in Houthi detention, yet keeps a Yemen envoy whose background continues to compromise personnel safety. If the UNSG wants to protect UN workers, the entire mediation framework in Yemen desperately needs an overhaul. arabcenterdc.org/resource/wh…
I am appalled & deeply saddened by the death of a @UN colleague, Mohammad el Shami, while in the custody of the Houthi de facto authorities in Yemen. He served with @UNHumanRights & had been arbitrarily detained by the Houthis since 2024.
This is the second death of a UN staff member in Houthi detention, following the death of a @WFP colleague in 2025.
I remain gravely concerned for the safety & well-being of the UN personnel, former UN staff & personnel from humanitarian & civil society organizations who remain detained.
I reiterate my call for their immediate & unconditional release.

Horrific. UN staff members are dying one after another in Houthi prisons.
More than 70 UN staff members have been detained by the Houthis for over two years.
I have a relative who has also been arrested simply because he worked with the United Nations. News like this leaves families terrified about what might happen to their loved ones.
More pressure must be put on the Houthis, especially by the EU.

Let's hope that this is the end of the candidacy of United Arab Emirates diplomat Lana Nusseibeh. No one should be UN secretary-general who is an apologist for those who arm a paramilitary force as it commits genocide -- the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. nitter.cf/pass_blue/status/21162…

🚨 BREAKING: A federal judge has DISMISSED Trump’s defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal over its reporting on his alleged birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein.
The judge dismissed the case WITH PREJUDICE, meaning Trump cannot simply refile the lawsuit in the same court.
In a major First Amendment ruling, the judge rejected Trump’s argument that his denials should have prevented the newspaper from publishing its reporting, warning that such a standard would run afoul of the Constitution.
The judge also described the Journal’s reporting as a “thoughtful and detailed investigation” and concluded that Trump’s defamation claims “lack merit.”
The judge left open the possibility that Trump could be ordered to pay the newspaper’s attorneys’ fees.
Trump can appeal, but for now, this is a major legal defeat.

Four young Egyptian couples in Kafr El Sheikh were filmed kissing in a secluded location. They were subsequently arrested. In Egypt, apparently, you can be arrested for kissing, even in private.
Their arrest, of course, enjoys considerable public approval. It is the raw meat the Egyptian police throw to the masses.
The unwritten bargain goes something like this: We arrest you if you protest and demand higher wages. We can torture you inside police stations. But fear not, we also arrest those promiscuous people you disapprove of. That should keep you satisfied.
These couples probably wouldn't have been arrested had they belonged to the upper class and been kissing in a high end bar or nightclub.

Diplomacy marathon underway as Iran delegation keep talking with Qatar mediators in Doha in bid to prevent an existential war.
Araghchi says his team
has cut the point at which Iran lift Hormuz blockade and can start nuclear talks from 7 to 2 days once US sanctions lifted. In theory the strait could open before the US midterms !!
The route through which ships would travel is only the route previously agreed between Iran and Oman. All other routes close.
No agreement yet on return of UN nuclear inspectors to look at bombed nuclear sites but significant the issue is in mix. A new protocol to inspect bombed nuclear sites is required Iran says.
No need for direct talks with the US at this stage, Araghchi said.
Iran’s Supreme Leader - after meeting military leaders - has lifted restrictions on missile range, and broadened the target bank. “Any level or type of threat must be met with an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response.”
Rezaei sect of supreme national security council in Iran TV says US tone in Vance letter to him has completely changed. Welcomes this as positive. Adds no new decision has been made regarding changes to the nuclear doctrine; “of course, the discussion has been raised that if the war resumes, do we want to maintain the previous doctrine or not?” Rezaei is the man that the US had adjudged speaks for those truly in power.
Trump “We may witness a major peace agreement at the G20 summit, involving Russia, Ukraine, and Iran”.
Rubio “decision to restart war not made”.
No one can accuse Qatar of allowing the world to sleepwalk into a war. In essence any return to war will be because the bonds of trust required in an agreement containing stages simply could not be created.
