In his poetic volume, Wanderings and Excursions, Ramsay MacDonald describes the โEngland of Romanceโ. He wrote, โI go onto the cliffs and see how well the blue sea and the white foam blend with the potato [coloured] fieldโ. England, he claimed, was the โideal land of exileโ. Here, a person โmay be free, may hear the echo and be heaved on the swell of every commotion disturbing the great world outside, and may enjoy all that Nature is pleased to provide for usโ.
