Manchester has an absolute plethora of examples displaying the juxtaposition between the wonderment of historic architecture and the anticlimax of hypermodernity.

Be part of the memories and growing community by joining us on our excursions across London and, of course, Britain.
I have met an array of wonderful people and formed many meaningful memories. I hope you'll attend and see what all the fuss is about.
Always check the pinned post on this account, @PubHistoryTours, or @VinnieSull1van to see upcoming tours or check my website, which can be found in my profile.
Please note that some of my tours have no relation to pubs even if we use them for rest stops. You do not have to be a drinker to enjoy one of my many tours. I hope to see you soon. π€

π₯β³οΈ: This wonderful feature is a pair of link-extinguishers (also commonly known as torch snuffers) mounted on the exterior wall of the 'Old Vergerβs House' in Hertford.
Lantern snuffers were useful items that were designed to safely extinguish candles, oil lamps, or lanterns without causing hot wax splatters, excessive smoke, or damage to the wick.
The house itself dates back to circa 1450 while the link snuffers are most likely a few hundred years old. They were mainly used through the 17th and 18th centuries, phasing out after the introduction of coal-gas street lamps around 1825.
Always keep your eye out for them across the UK as they're a rare yet wonderful relic of bygone England.
This unfathomably spectacular 15th century building is the 'Old Verger's House' at 43 St Andrew Street and is the oldest surviving domestic building in Hertford, dating back to circa 1450.
With its crooked, timber-frames, whitewashed beams (a traditional Tudor limewash style), oak-paneled Jacobean doorway, and various other medieval features, this relic looks as though it's straight out of a fairytale.
This building is a key insight into how much of England, and indeed, Britain, would have looked during the middle ages. It even gives us an important view as to how London would have looked before the "Great Fire" of 1666.
It's also an important piece of evidence as to how long historic buildings can last if we prioritise and maintain them. This is what future generations should see, not waves of metal and glass. We can only imagine how many more buildings like this we'd have if the right effort had been made.
The more you look at it, the more amazed you'll be. Make note of its tiny windows and little doors.
As I say often, England's medieval/tudor buildings (of this kind) may not be as grand as the symmetrically perfect buildings from epochs such as ancient Greece, but they're a wholesome reminder of quaint homliness.
You can visit this beauty on a tour for @PubHistoryTours whenever we visit Hertford (Accessible via the greater Anglia from Liverpool street, Stratford, or various other locations). This is a special day out as the town is packed with relics like this and very old, beautiful pubs. Keep an eye on upcoming tour dates to join us.
If you like this building/content, give this post a share to help others find it. Or, to keep them up to date on my tours that will frequent this area, and many others like it. π€β³οΈ
We have lots or tours coming up including some Christmas specials that are ideal for the whole family. Please share this post and consider joining us on one of our many fantastic days out.
See you soon. π€
