The Budget offered the new government the chance of a rural reset. Its response to this opportunity was, to say the least, underwhelming...

Last night, while the Chancellor showed off his pint chugging skills to an adoring pack of political anoraks in London, rural organisations busily scoured through his 166-page Budget. The overwhelming conclusion, I’m disappointed to report, is that he missed a golden opportunity to reset the government’s fractured relationship with the countryside.

Andy Burnham pledged to revisit the hated Family Farm Tax. He has failed to do so. This tax continues to tarnish the government’s rural record.
We will continue to vocally oppose this tax and call for its abolition.

A colossal error not to reverse the disgraceful family farm tax. It belongs in the dustbin of history. We fight on.

Good to see the amazing efforts of rural people recognised during the recent wildfires. An important reminder. Their assistance is vital to emergency services. Well done everybody involved.

In the countryside, driving is a necessity.
Rural residents and businesses cannot always rely on public transport. Rising fuel costs hit household budgets, jobs and local businesses.
This Budget, it’s time for a rural reset. Write to the Prime Minister asking for a rural reset - ruralreset.org

In which I dissect Defra’s plans to license game shooting which, in a crowded field, would rank as amongst the most stupid and politically damaging rural policies of recent times @CAupdates
Licensing gamebird shooting means banning it first, writes the Countryside Alliance’s Tim Bonner, and a licence that can be pulled without warning would stop anyone investing in a shoot. shootinguk.co.uk/legislation…

Is the government doing enough to support rural businesses?

Today's Express. The government must rule out this ridiculous proposal that would harm rural people.

The family farm tax was a catastrophic mistake. It should be consigned to history in this week’s Budget. Doing so would be the first step in the government repairing its relationship with rural Britain.

The Welsh Government has announced a consultation on their policy proposal to underground all new electrical cabling up to 132kV and to do away with any idea of steel lattice pylons. More to come when we have digested it but great news for campaigners who get a chance to be heard
