Netanyahu is the clear winner of Israel’s election. Likud is the largest party with approximately 27 seats, while his bloc is expected to win around 53. That is a remarkable achievement considering that most polls predicted Eisenkot’s party would finish first and the opposition bloc would come out ahead. Yes, the opposition together with the Arab parties is projected to hold about 67 seats, meaning that a majority of the Knesset will be represented by parties opposed to Netanyahu. But that is not how governments are formed in Israel. What matters is who can assemble 61 seats into a functioning coalition. No one can do that right now, but Netanyahu appears to be in a stronger position. How did he pull it off? Two explanations: First, Israeli politics remains deeply tribal. Despite October 7, the failures of his government and the momentum against him, Netanyahu’s traditional voters largely stayed loyal. They might have reservations about his policies and even his leadership, but when they enter the voting booth, they come home. Second, Netanyahu’s closing campaign was extremely effective. He focused on two fears: Iran and massive Arab turnout. To his critics, it looked like desperation. But Netanyahu understood something about the Israeli electorate. These messages tapped into deep, visceral fears about the country’s security and future. And for many Israelis, Netanyahu remains the known commodity, the leader they instinctively turn to when danger looms. Whatever they think of his record, the alternative was perceived as an even greater gamble. That is perhaps the most important lesson of this election: Netanyahu did not need Israelis to forget October 7 or forgive his failures. He needed enough of them to fear the alternative more.

Israel election update. Boiling down down the tortured coalition calculations and infinite yet simultaneously limited permutations for a new government: gridlock.

Either: 1. Eisenkot, Bennet, Lieberman, Golan take Israeli Arabs' outstretched hand and replace Netanyahu. Settlers, hard-right, haredim won't recognize this gov't. Anarchy. 2. Eisenkot, Bennet, Lieberman take Netanyahu's outstretched hand and boycott Golan, hard-right, Arabs & Haredim (~50% of Israelis and growing fast). Anarchy. So anarchy.

No clear winner emerged in Israel's elections on Wednesday morning, with the vote count still underway. Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition nor the opposition bloc, led by Gadi Eisenkot, secured a majority, according to exit polls on Tuesday night. For many Israelis, after three years of war on multiple fronts, the election is seen as existential, and voter turnout appeared to be high. cbsn.ws/3VXWfB3

Interesting take here. Bottom line: Segal says expect gridlock in Israel - and a slim chance that Netanyahu is not the future Prime Minister either after these elections or the next

Ronnie Teram Gilad spent $3,000 to travel from Boston to Israel for just 36 hours to vote in the country’s first national elections since the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Gilad is one of thousands of Israelis making the trip for what many voters are calling an existential decision. She told @CBSMATTGUTMAN that she wants to make a difference: “My fingers are crossed that we fulfill what we came here for.”

Half-way through Election Day and turnout is highest in over 50 years. In part driven by the Arab vote. If this continues until 2200 the Netanyahu bloc will shrink further and the hard-right Amcha Yisrael party increasingly unlikely to cross the electoral threshold. OTOH also the Eisenkot bloc will be smaller and the only option for them to form a government will be some kind of deal with the Arab parties.

Record voter turnout is being reported in Israel, with the highest number of voters since 1977. Analysts tell me this likely favors the opposition, but they caution Netanyahu is Israel's political mastermind and can never be counted out.

Sources close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied allegations that he is considering a new military campaign against Iran before Tuesday’s parliamentary elections — in which polls suggest Netanyahu’s coalition is trailing in the race. Right now - tens of thousands of people are rallying peacefully in Tel Aviv ahead of elections Tuesday that most Israelis are calling existential. They say they are rallying in for unity, in favor the opposition, against Netanyahu and his government and demanding a commission of inquiry into the failures of the October 7th massacre. There is more energy and less rage than I've seen in a while here. #israel #elections #telaviv #tlv

Could Israel enter the fight against the Houthi's in Yemen - and could that lead to the postponement of Israel Israeli elections (because of the threat of a likely inevitable Houthi response to Israel's putative campaign.)

The ordnance that exploded on schoolchildren hiking in the Ramim Ridge area in northern Israel is believed by the military to be a submunition from a Hezbollah rocket. During the war in recent years, Hezbollah launched several Grad rockets containing dozens of BRB1-type submunitions at northern Israel. The rockets spread the submunitions over wide areas, and often do not explode on impact. One of the schoolchildren is believed to have picked up a submunition during a hike along the Naftali Mountains Forest scenic route and put it in his backpack. Several minutes later, the submunition exploded, according to a preliminary probe by authorities. The blast killed a teenager and wounded 19 others, including two in serious condition and three in moderate condition.

The videos show pilgrims lining up for flights or waiting during haj in Riyadh's international airport. The haj is one of the five most important events in the life of a Muslim. The Houthis must have known the airport would be filled with pilgrims
Saudi TV airing very brutal footage of the attack on the Riyadh airport. Many people are visibly in pilgrim attire — meaning the Houthis just maimed and killed a bunch of Muslims in pilgrimage. Imagery likely to be met with rage across the Middle East.
