Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

A rare moment of political courage in the British Parliament. British MP Nick Timothy tells Muslims crying “Islamophobia” to shove it: “Muhammad was a false prophet. Britain is not bound by Islam or Sharia.”
What turned the nation that once set the standard for Western civilisation into a people that now hates its own history, sacrifices its own children, and bends the knee to those who want it destroyed? Britain was the moral compass of the free world. Cold, reserved, unsentimental. Never stupid, never suicidal. While America turned the hamburger into a global brand, you drank tea with an accent that announced you as the heirs of Shakespeare, common law, parliamentary government and an empire that had shaped the modern world. You were not ashamed of what made you British. You treated it as a birthright. What changed? How did a people famous for the stiff upper lip become addicted to self-flagellation? How did defending your borders, your culture and your own become a thought crime, while importing those who openly despise everything you represent became a civic virtue? The moment anyone names the pattern, it is not outsiders who come for them. It is their own institutions. You keep open the embassy of the Iranian regime that has plotted terror on British soil and called for the murder of Britons. You sanction the one ally that warned you and helped stop the attack. You send troops abroad while jihadists walk free on your streets. Anyone who points this out is branded the problem by the same establishment that created it. Other nations should study Britain as a warning, not a model. Watch for the symptoms: when your elites treat your own people as the enemy. When patriotism becomes a sin and open borders a sacrament. When the votes of those who reject your civilisation matter more than the safety of those who built it. Britain chose that path. The results are no longer deniable. Protect your own people first. Stop appeasing those who hate you. Enough is enough is enough!

The man entrusted with Britain's national security is married to a journalist who publicly questioned the testimony of Israeli rape victims, sneered at solidarity with Israel the day after October 7, and told James O'Brien he could "do better" than calling Hamas a "murderous death cult". You'd have expected Sarah Helm to keep her head down while questions swirl about her husband, Jonathan Powell. You'd have expected wrong. On Monday, she waded in to defend the Palestine poppy, days after the Telegraph revealed that its creator, an NHS doctor, had circulated an image comparing Israel to a cancer. Helm is entitled to her opinions, however grotesque. But when your husband is privy to the nation's deepest secrets, they cease to be a family matter. Powell owes the public answers. The Cabinet Office owes us an explanation of what safeguards exist. And he should step down. My latest column (link in first reply) 👇

The problem in the UK is not Islamophobia – it’s Islamophilia. Our idiot politicians constantly indulge Islamists and their grating politics of victimhood. Enough is enough. Islam is not special – we must be free to ridicule it, says Brendan O’Neill buff.ly/NgMSiZb

Three years ago on October 7, the world changed for Jews across the world when we saw a massacre in Israel carried out by terrorists. On October 8, the world changed for me. Just a day after those horrific attacks we saw just how many people still hold abhorrent views and turn a blind eye to Islamist extremism. Three years on, the Conservative Party must be clear: We stand with British Jews. We will confront antisemitism and we have the moral clarity to know who our allies are - and Israel is one of them.

One of the main arsonists wants to confiscate the matches now? This is the Green Party you helped create. Now you have to live with the consequences of the nutters that invited in. Outside the Green bubble, everyone can see you’re a racist, Jew-obsessed, anti-British cult.

@dpduk_ The most awful customer service that is almost certainly against Consumer Law. My wife returned £300 shopping via DPD. After 2 and a half weeks it became apparent from the retainer that DPD had failed to deliver it. On contacting DPD they say they have a 14 day…

First thing I see landing in Valencia, in the airport bathroom. Spain has a serious problem. The result of performative woke nonsense from Pedro Sanchez. Very nice city other than that I would recommend - just don’t wear your kippah

“The reason they hate Zack Polanski is that they can’t Corbynize him because he is a Jewish politician who criticizes Israel.” Mehdi Hasan is right: that is exactly why the islamists have co-opted Polanski’s Greens as their lightening rod (& Trojan Horse). They know he provides an effective camouflage. And they know he is sufficiently craven and opportunistic to indulge them.  That is why today we see ‘Greens’ madly lining up to defend a regime that tortures and kills young girls for showing their hair or dancing, executes gays, worships death over life, and murders tens of thousands of young people simply for disagreeing with them.  Did anyone notice the new Green MP’s Maiden speech to Parliament had nothing to do with the environment? Or that only 5% or so of the motions currently being debated by Green Members have anything to do with the environment? So yes, the radical Islamists have played an absolute blinder.

Polanski is a know-nothing blowhard. The only Jewish person to lead a political party — bar, that is, Benjamin Disraeli, Ed Miliband, Michael Howard, Jimmy Goldsmith and Herbert Samuel. He is clearly ignorant of the country’s history. And much more besides.
For whoever needs to hear this I'm the only Jewish person to lead a political party - third largest in the country. The Daily Mail have been & always will be my enemy - they historically supported fascists & continue to do so. I'll take no lectures from them on Antisemitism.

Nobody said there can't be isolated incidences of racism in our Party least of all me - antsemitism as well as Islamophobia just as in society alas. The point is whether it's a special problem for our party ie. greater tolerance of it or greater preponderance of it.

The UK Together rally in London today is being sold as a march of love, unity, and hope - against racism and the far-right. But a quick look at who’s backing it reveals a very different story. 🧵
Today’s the day! Meet at 12pm on Park Lane to march together against the far right. Let’s make history.
