Ms Buthelezi emphasised that there is no panacea for transforming African mining, but that historical data mining, underpinned by digitisation and digitalisation, is one of the solutions. She further outlined how the CGS is focused on the integration of historical geological records with modern datasets and leveraging platforms such as the Virtual Core Library to unlock new insights and support exploration. #AfricanMiningWeek #Geoscience

Mawande Ncume presented on his research that provides understanding of the Mambulu Complex in South Africa, previously thought to be a remnant of ancient ocean floor. Field mapping and new 3D inversion modelling using airborne magnetic data revealed that it is, in fact, a subsurface saucer-shaped complex, representative of typical magmatic processes- effectively casting doubt on the the old theory. #19SAGA2026 #geophysics

Noluvuyo Dudumashe’s presented on her research which showcases innovative techniques for detecting concealed nickel, copper and lithium deposits in the Northern Cape. By combining satellite imagery, airborne magnetic surveys and drone-based scanning, the study identified a potential mineral-rich underground lava tube. This integrated approach supports more precise drilling, optimising exploration costs and resources while reducing the need for extensive excavation. #19SAGA2026 #geophysics

The @CGS_RSA is currently participating at the' Africa Mining Week 2026, taking place in Cape Town from 14–16 October 2026, showcasing its role in advancing geoscience research and unlocking Africa’s mineral potential. As part of the programme, Ms Siphelele Buthelezi, CGS Executive Manager: Office of the CEO, presented on “Unlocking Africa’s Mineral Potential Through Digital Geoscience.” Her presentation highlighted how the CGS is transforming legacy data into accessible, interoperable digital information through data acquisition, preservation, curation and digital repositories. Through its virtual data platforms, the CGS aims to support data-driven mineral exploration, resource modelling and informed decision-making for the future of mining. The CGS exhibition stand also welcomed various delegates, including Ms Ntokozo Nzimande, Deputy Director-General for Mining, Minerals and Policy Development at the @DMPR_ZA. #AfricanMiningWeek #Geoscience

David Ngobeni presented on “Integrated Geophysical Investigation of the Shu Shu Hot Springs, KwaZulu‑Natal, South Africa” David investigated the Shu Shu hot springs, exploring the underground mechanisms through aerial surveys and soil electrification. They discovered that large subterranean fractures serve as conduits for rainwater, which penetrates the Earth, gets superheated, and is expelled back to the surface, generating heat. #19SAGA2026
