Our team at #COP17 sharing the Ogiek story: Community-led mapping + biodiversity monitoring = proof that Indigenous Peoples are nature's best custodians. #Biodiversity #IndigenousPeoples
The Misak people shared how they reclaimed their land and built a Life Plan to protect it for generations. A powerful lesson for the Ogiek as they develop their own community vision
Day 1 of community vision development: The goal is a shared Life Plan to guide the next 50 to 100 years. This comes as the community is in the process of community land registration.
The Ogiek of Mt. Elgon are developing their first Life Plan, a long-term vision by and for the community. The aim: replace need-by-need responses with a united plan built on shared values. It will guide every decision and guard against outside influence.
Thank you to all who made Chepkitale CLMC induction possible: @NLC_Kenya, the Community Land Registrar and Ministry of Lands in Bungoma, county surveyors, local administration, @TenureFacility, @CLAN_Kenya , @OgiekPeoples and Indigenous Young Moms.
Chepkitale is now a gazetted adjudication area and the Ogiek community of Mt Elgon have elected a CLMC. This week in Bungoma, the committee, elders and local leaders had a 3 days of induction training. @CLAN_Kenya @OgiekPeoples @TenureFacility
Day 2 went through the registration process step by step: the documents needed, how boundaries are confirmed and how disputes over land can be settled fairly. Members also learned how to keep proper records and minutes, so every decision can be traced and checked.

Peace is not simply the absence of war. It depends on the ability of societies to confront disagreement without violence, protect human rights and dignity, and keep dialogue open when tensions rise.
Today, conflict, displacement, discrimination, hate speech, backsliding on rights and polarization are fracturing communities and eroding trust.
On this #InternationalDayOfPeace, @UNESCO calls for greater investment in the institutions, skills and relationships that allow societies to address tensions before they turn into violence.

Indigenous Peoples make up less than 5% of the world’s population, yet they protect significant amounts of global biodiversity. These heroes should be supported on today’s #IndigenousPeoplesDay and every day.
