Reporting isn't free. If AI companies can take the work & divert the revenue that supports it, the public will ultimately pay the price through less independent journalism & less accountability. - @courtneyr

NEW - A French appeals court ruling reinforces a fundamental principle:
Dominant platforms must not be allowed to unilaterally determine what journalism is worth or how it can be used.

EXCLUSIVE: In less than 12 hours, a group of ex-DOGE cyber researchers were able to penetrate Anthropic’s systems using AI agents — including Slack channels where the most sensitive models are discussed.
This is just weeks after
Anthropic whistleblower Joseph Coxon charged the company w/launching “a hubristic gamble” from a “private company’s Slack.”

Meta has built a trillion-dollar business using willfully unfair, anticompetitive, deceptive, and unconscionable practices. The unilateral change to its use of business website content buried in its TOS is but the latest example. courtneyradsch.substack.com/…

Voters who Googled how to donate to Talarico got an AI answer that led them to give to someone else.
A network of fake news sites seeded messaging about state and local candidates that AI answers picked up on.

Starlink has become critical military infrastructure. But it remains under the control of Elon Musk, a billionaire who can decide who gets access and on what terms.
That's far too much power for one private company (& CEO) to wield.

NEW: @courtneyr calls on regulators to put a stop to Meta's abusive new content rule:

Meta is essentially saying they will control not only their own users' IP to make and maintain AI products, but also any IP a Meta user "makes available."
This should raise alarm to all regulators about Big Tech's abuse-of-dominance tactics using AI development as a pretext.
Meta should back down on implementing any unilateral changes that undercut publisher & user controls over how their intellectual property is used for AI commercial products...

Should the world's biggest AI companies get to write their own safety rules?
@danielahanley & Arnav Rao argue instead for open safety standards, independent oversight, & no special antitrust exemptions. @monthly

Google controls a critical part of how journalism reaches the public.
It has hampered independent media and democratic debate.

The courts had an opportunity to restore competition and curb one of the world's most powerful monopolies.
Instead, they left Google's empire intact.

Glad to be part of this letter and the fight for copyright enforcement around the world.
Today a group of 63 international media organizations led by the News/Media Alliance delivered a letter to senior Australian politicians asking them to reject proposed changes to the country’s copyright laws that would allow artificial intelligence companies to use copyrighted material in training their models.
Collectively, the signatories represent thousands of copyright owners, creative sector organizations, and publishers across the world, and contribute to a growing domestic and international consensus, including comments from the Vatican, condemning the proposed changes.
They echo claims from Australia’s creative community that this would upend the country’s copyright regime by forcing rights holders to effectively forfeit their rights unless they opt-out. This undermines decades of international precedent, devalues their works and investments, and threatens their ability to negotiate for fair compensation for access to and use of their works.

If you're a business or artist with intellectual property, watch the clock.
10 days until Meta claims the right to scrape your website to develop its AI. Your consent? Apparently unnecessary. All it takes is someone sharing a link on Facebook or Instagram - or you using Meta's services.

This is exactly the kind of AI financing risk (and exposure to the wider economy) we examine in our new report with @RealBankReform, out today: openmarketsinstitute.org/pub…
“If CoreWeave is borrowing at 9% and the best return they can get off of that is a 5% return, it doesn’t matter how much they scale: They’re destroying value at every turn…That’s especially true for the type of neocloud that funds their entire investment based on debt. The more leverage we use to build data centers, the more risk we’re bringing into the system.”
