As Uganda marks 64 years of independence, CEHURD joins fellow Ugandans in celebrating the freedoms, resilience and progress that have shaped our nation. Independence is also about the freedom to live healthy, dignified lives and to access justice without fear, stigma or discrimination. Through our work on the #RightToHealth, sexual and reproductive health and rights, legal aid and community empowerment, we continue to push for a Uganda where every person, especially women and girls, young people and underserved communities can enjoy these freedoms. As we celebrate, we recommit to building a community where health, dignity and justice are a reality for all. #UgandaAt64

International Safe Abortion Day offers another moment to interrogate the colonial legal legacies that continue to influence access to safe abortion in Africa. In their opinion piece, Dr. Jessica Oga and Dr. Moses Mulumba examine the colonial origins of Senegalโ€™s abortion law and its continued application in post-independence Senegal. Their analysis raises important questions about inherited legal systems, reproductive rights, and the pursuit of reproductive justice in Africa. A choice can shape a future. When young people have accurate information and access to contraception, they can make informed decisions about their reproductive health. This week, letโ€™s make informed choices possible. #MondayMotivation #SRHR #YouthLead

On this International Safe Abortion Day, we call for solidarity and collective action from the government and health systems to prioritize bodily autonomy and accessible healthcare. No woman or girl should have to risk her health or her life because of unsafe abortion, barriers to care, stigma, or discrimination. Comprehensive abortion care is a matter of health, dignity, and rights. #InternationalSafeAbortionDay #ReproductiveJustice #Sept28

Unsafe abortion is still one of the major causes of maternal mortality in Uganda. On #InternationalSafeAbortionDay, we call for access to safe and legal abortion care in Uganda. No one should lose their life as a result of seeking essential healthcare services #SafeandLegal
Unsafe abortion is a hidden public health crisis in Uganda. Each year, 314,300 abortions occur, many in unsafe conditions. Over 93,300 women are hospitalized with complications This week, we are shedding light on the scale of this crisisโฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธ

Ugandaโ€™s health-sector guidelines have previously estimated hundreds of thousands of unsafe abortions annually, with a significant number resulting in severe complications. Behind every statistic is a woman or girl - a daughter, mother, sister, friend or member of a community - whose life should not have been lost because she could not access timely, safe and appropriate reproductive healthcare. Unsafe abortion is preventable. The @WHO notes that deaths and severe complications can be prevented through comprehensive sexuality education, access to effective contraception, safe abortion care where legally available, and timely treatment of complications. Today, we remember the lives lost. We stand with those living with complications. And we call for a health system where no woman or girl is pushed into an unsafe abortion because of lack of information, services, affordability, stigma or fear. Access to safe and legal abortion is not only a matter of healthcare - it is a matter of dignity, bodily autonomy, equality and the right to life. The question is not whether unsafe abortion costs lives. It does. The question is how many more lives must be lost before we act? #SafeAndLegalCare

โ€œSolidarity in Actionโ€ Protecting the health and lives of women and girls is a shared responsibility. It is the foundation of a just and equitable society. Today, on International #SafeAbortion Day, let us commit to turning our solidarity into decisive action. Let us work towards building a Uganda where no woman has to risk her life for essential healthcare. Let us ensure that every woman and girl can access safe and respectful care she deserves. The Maputo Protocol is not a foreign concept imposed on Africa. It is an African legal framework, developed, negotiated, and adopted by African countries to address the realities, rights, and needs of women and girls across the continent. #SafeAndLegalCare Protecting womenโ€™s rights is deeply rooted in African values of dignity, community, justice and protection of one another. The Maputo Protocol strengthens these values by providing a framework for states to uphold womenโ€™s rights and advance gender equality. Defending the Maputo Protocol means defending the principle that women and girls deserve to live with dignity, make informed decisions about their lives and bodies, access essential health services, and participate fully in society without discrimination or violence. Its importance goes beyond legislation. It is about translating commitments into action and ensuring that the rights African countries have collectively recognized are respected, protected and implemented. The Maputo Protocol is African. Protecting womenโ€™s rights is an authentic African value. Let us continue to stand for the rights, dignity and wellbeing of women and girls across Africa. @WomenWithAMiss1

The Maputo Protocol is an African framework shaped by African voices to protect and advance the rights of women and girls. Africa has already built a regional framework for advancing womenโ€™s rights. The task before us is to protect those commitments and ensure they continue to serve women and girls across the continent. The Maputo Protocol remains an important part of that framework. #SafeAndLegalCare
