CFU Joins HRF Campaign Calling for Dr. Gulshan Abbas's Release: CFU joined the Human Rights Foundation and October 30 Coalition's #FreedomStartsWithAName campaign to demand the release of Dr. Gulshan Abbas, who has been imprisoned since 2018 in retaliation for her sister @RushanAbbas's advocacy, and draw attention to other Uyghur political prisoners.

Dr. Gulshan Abbas, a retired Uyghur doctor, mother, and grandmother, was taken by Chinese authorities in 2018, just days after her sister @RushanAbbas spoke out against the CCP's persecution of Uyghurs. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison in a secret trial on baseless charges. Her family remains separated from her, with no independent confirmation of her health or well-being. On #PoliticalPrisonersDay, we join @HRF and the October 30 Coalition in calling for her immediate release and an end to the persecution of Uyghur political prisoners. #FreedomStartsWithAName

China's censorship is so extreme that even a footballer's remarks about a Chinese leader can spark outrage while leaving people in China unable to see what was actually said. As @BBCNews reports, Kylian Mbappé's comments exposed how Beijing's information controls shape what the public is allowed to hear and discuss. For Uyghurs, these restrictions are part of a familiar and broader system of censorship and repression. Mbappé and other public figures should not apologize for speaking the truth or face pressure to remain silent to appease the CCP. Speaking openly about China's repression should never be treated as something to apologize for. Read here: bbc.com/news/articles/cm3wv3…

Beijing is condemning the U.S. decision to add three Chinese genomics companies to the UFLPA Entity List, calling it politically motivated and threatening retaliation. As @Reuters reports, the companies will now face U.S. import restrictions over concerns about their links to Uyghur forced labor. Rather than addressing the extensive evidence of forced labor and persecution in East Turkistan, the CCP continues to dismiss international scrutiny and defend companies implicated in these abuses. CFU welcomes stronger UFLPA enforcement and urges other governments to take similar action to prevent their markets from benefiting from Uyghur forced labor. See here: reuters.com/world/asia-pacif…

The U.S. has banned imports from three Chinese genomics companies over concerns about their involvement in forced labor and the CCP’s persecution of Uyghurs. These companies have been linked to genetic testing and surveillance programs used by Chinese authorities to monitor and repress Uyghurs in East Turkistan. Their involvement raises serious concerns about genetic data and surveillance technology being used by the CCP. This is an important step in holding companies accountable for their role in these abuses. Stronger enforcement of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) and similar measures from other countries are necessary to prevent companies from profiting from the suffering of Uyghurs. A story of courage, family separation, and the devastating reach of the CCP's transnational repression. In an article for @BitterWinterMag, a Uyghur activist in the Netherlands shares his struggle to find answers about 19 missing family members, the death of his father in detention, and the violence he faced while peacefully protesting in The Hague. His story reflects the suffering of countless Uyghur families who have been torn apart by Beijing's persecution, with relatives imprisoned or disappeared and those living abroad facing intimidation for speaking out. Governments must do more to protect Uyghur communities from transnational repression and demand accountability for the families still waiting for answers. Read here: bitterwinter.org/a-moral-sig…

Starbucks has chosen to expand its business in the Uyghur region despite overwhelming evidence of state-imposed forced labor, mass detention, and crimes against humanity committed against Uyghurs by the CCP. We stand with @stopforcdlabour in demanding that @Starbucks close its stores in the region. Every new investment helps normalize business as usual in a place where Uyghurs continue to face systematic persecution.
‼️ We're shocked to hear that @Starbucks opened two stores in the #Uyghur Region when many companies are leaving due to state-imposed forced labour & human rights abuses. Starbucks MUST shut down its stores in the Uyghur Region. Help us build the pressure!

Beijing continues to intensify its exploitation of East Turkistan’s land, resources, and people to fuel its economic ambitions. It has expanded exports, energy production, and international trade in a region where it has imprisoned Uyghurs, subjected them to forced labor, and attacked their culture and identity. This new @WSJ article details how the CCP continues to exploit the region and its people despite years of international condemnation, all while foreign companies continue pursuing business opportunities there. Economic expansion cannot come at the expense of Uyghur lives and fundamental rights. Read here: wsj.com/world/china/xinjiang…\
