China is not only suppressing Uyghur culture and identity, it is rewriting Uyghur history to justify its repression, genocide and crimes against humanity. In his latest article, @AHakimIdris examines how Beijing distorts historical narratives to legitimize its repressive policies in East Turkistan. uyghurstudy.org/chinas-destr…

“The Uyghur reading of the same records is far more faithful to the evidence. East Turkistan is a homeland the Manchu empire conquered in the eighteenth century and that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seized by force in 1949. Its people are a Turkic nation with their own language, literature and memory of statehood. Islam, rooted in Kashgar since the tenth century and kept alive at shrines for centuries, is not something that came from outside, but their own faith. In the end, the real question is to whom the right to tell a people’s history belongs. The Chinese claim is that it belongs to the state that detains people, erases their language and demolishes their holy places. A more honest scholarly approach would begin with the Uyghurs’ own narrative, which these studies were written to silence.”

Mao Zedong’s rule brought devastating repression, including religious persecution, the destruction of mosques and temples, and the suppression of Uyghurs and Tibetans. His disastrous policies contributed to tens of millions of deaths.

(WSJ) wsj.com/world/china/xinjiang…

One example (of many) of how negative emotional expressions - most commonly, crying - were deemed problematic and a subject for "ideological work": shahit.biz/urumqireports.php… "provisional sentencing" = camp sentences that were given out to most detainees in late 2018 / early 2019.

“Starbucks is giving the Chinese government exactly what it wants: a familiar, trusted global brand that makes the region look normal. Human Rights Watch has warned that corporate presence in Xinjiang feeds the government's narrative that nothing is wrong. Chinese state media is already using foreign investment that way, citing it as proof that international concern is "unfounded." There is no reason for Starbucks to open locations in Xinjiang. Let them know that you prefer your coffee free of genocide.” actionnetwork.org/petitions/…

Xi Jinping offers the world a seductive promise: a “community with a shared future for mankind.” Its intellectual ancestry is rooted in tianxia—a sinocentric ordering that encompasses “all under heaven.” This is the vision Beijing presents as harmony without hegemony, and for many years, both Canada and the U.S. swallowed this line, and the accompanying promise that China would liberalize and democratize its governance model—a misguided proposition which James Mann correctly labeled the “China Fantasy,” but which most bought into because it promised profits, at least in the short term. substack.com/home/post/p-221…

The CCP imposes forced labour, mass arbitrary detention and imprisonment, mass surveillance and restrictions on cultural and religious life. In 2025, there were 3.36 million forced labour transfers and over a million children were placed in state-run boarding schools, where they are raised cut off from their cultural heritage. The Uyghur language is banned in schools. Uyghur books and religious texts have been burned. Uyghur women are subjected to forced abortion, sterilisation and marriage to men from the dominant Han ethnic group. ipsnews.net/2026/10/china-my…

The choice of Urumqi as the meeting spot was not incidental. Chinese officials are positioning the Uyghur region as a land-based gateway through which China’s digital infrastructure, computing capacity, data systems and technical standards can extend into Central Asia and the wider Eurasian market. At the same time, holding the forum in Urumqi helps Beijing recast a region internationally associated with mass surveillance and severe human rights violations as a showcase of innovation, openness and prosperity. asiasentinel.com/p/uyghur-lo…

The case is one of several examples of AI-enabled digital transnational repression detailed in a recent report by Anthropic’s Threat Intelligence team, published on Sept. 10, 2026. The report gives direct evidence that generative AI is being incorporated into the machinery of cross-border repression, enabling authoritarian governments and their proxies to build scalable workflows for identifying, monitoring, and targeting diaspora activists and exiled dissidents around the world. justsecurity.org/159245/how-…
