Great piece in our February issue on @TeamUSA alpine skier Bryce Bennett, a Lake Tahoe native who grew up shredding its slopes and catching its trout. He'll race in the downhill Saturday morning. @usskiteam @NBCOlympics @stifel #TeamUSA #Olympics2026

Jessica Turner Named President and CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership
trcp.org/2026/09/29/jessica-…
The board of directors of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jessica Turner as President and CEO. A lifelong outdoorswoman, Turner is a proven leader in legislative strategy, conservation policy, and organizational growth with nearly two decades of experience. She will begin the role on November 9, 2026.
“Jessica is a proven coalition builder and an inspiring leader, with a deep knowledge of conservation policy, a real respect for our hunting and fishing heritage, and well-earned standing within the conservation community,” said Matt Cook, interim CEO and chair of the TRCP Board of Directors. “On behalf of the board, I am thrilled to welcome Jess Turner as the next president and CEO of TRCP. She’s spent her career building bipartisan support for America’s legacy of conservation, habitat and access, and making the business case for why it matters. We couldn’t be more excited to have her on the team.”
Most recently, Turner served as the President of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), where she led the coalition that helped secure passage of the Great American Outdoors Act and the EXPLORE Act, delivering lasting funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund and modernizing outdoor recreation access and infrastructure on public lands.
“I’ve worked alongside TRCP for years, and I’ve always respected both its reputation, mission, and the results it delivers for hunters, anglers and partners alike,” said Turner. “As TRCP approaches its 25th anniversary, I’m ready to help lead the next chapter, carrying forward Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation legacy and continuing to shape the future of this work. I’m excited to be working alongside TRCP’s excellent staff, dedicated board and partners, and to build on the relationships across this community that have always made this work possible. This work only gets done together.”
Turner brings nearly two decades of leadership experience to the most impactful coalition of conservation organizations in the country. Read more: trcp.org/2026/09/29/jessica-…

SCI expressed profound disappointment with a Los Angeles County Superior Court ruling that dismissed SCI and its litigation partners’ claims against the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Catalina Island Conservancy in relation to a permit that authorizes the eradication of Catalina Island’s mule deer population. 🦌
“SCI disagrees with the court’s decision,” said SCI CEO W. Laird Hamberlin. “We're disappointed because the public deserved a transparent process. The fact is that out of more than 100 permits issued under this program, only the Catalina Island Conservancy received different treatment. For a project that would completely eliminate a long-established deer population, we believe a full environmental review and greater public scrutiny were not just appropriate, they were necessary.”
“At its core, this case is about whether the public was given a voice before an entire deer population was slated for removal,” Hamberlin said. “We believe decisions with consequences this significant demand transparency, accountability, and a hard look at the science. Californians deserved a full review and open process. SCI is evaluating appellate options and will continue fighting for a fair and transparent approach to wildlife management.”
Despite the adverse ruling, SCI reaffirms its commitment to protecting hunting opportunities, promoting sound wildlife management, and ensuring that state agencies remain accountable to the public.

Happy Birthday to America's Second National Park!
On September 25th, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed legislation establishing the second national park in America – Sequoia National Park. Created to protect giant sequoia trees from logging, this national park was the first formed specifically to protect a living organism.
Sequoia trees are an icon of resilience and community, bringing visitors together from across the world to marvel at their size, age, and beauty.
