DYK: coolers were popular in the Georgian period too? This lead-lined cellarette would’ve stored alcoholic beverages keeping them nice and cool. Since the Campbells entertained many guests, a cellarette like this one would’ve come in handy!🧵1/2 #history #georgian #food

Our mystery object from the last installment of Culinary Quirks is a wine caddy. Hosts like the Campbells would take a bottle of wine from their cellarette and place it on one of the silver and wood compartments. Then, the beverage could be passed around for guests to sample. 2/2

This lavish centrepiece is an epergne, a French invention dating back to the early 1700s. During elaborate multi-course dinners, guests could sample fine delicacies like nuts, sweetmeats, and fruit from its intricately carved glass dishes.🧵1/2 #history #georgian #food

Epergnes became a symbol of wealth since treats were quite expensive – citrus fruits, for one, were imported from China and Spain. Typically, the gentlemen would show off their manners by offering these to other guests. No takers? The food would be saved, unlike the scraps. 2/2

Fun-fact: hand-carved fragments like this one represented an artisan’s originality – so much so that project plans would often be destroyed after completion to prevent replication! View the whole #LostFoundTO exhibit online here: campbellhousemuseum.ca/lost-…
