Telesat Q3 2026: Lightspeed global service slips to mid-2028 🛰️
Telesat has pushed global service on its Lightspeed constellation back three months, to the end of June 2028. The Arctic service for Canada’s military still starts on time, at the end of March 2028.
🚀 The first two satellites, which Telesat told SpaceQ last December would launch in December 2026, will now ride on another customer’s Falcon 9 no earlier than June 2027. MDA Space is still building them.

🇨🇦 SpaceQ was at Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Longueuil as Joshua Kutryk stepped outside the International Space Station for the first time.
Kutryk and NASA's Anil Menon spent seven hours and 11 minutes outside the station on Thursday, installing the seventh of eight new roll-out solar arrays. It was the first spacewalk by a CSA astronaut in more than seven years.
🎙️ We also spoke with astronaut David Saint-Jacques, the last Canadian to spacewalk before Kutryk.
📺 NASA's full replay of the spacewalk is included.

The Canadian Space Agency opens bids on two RADARSAT+ pathfinder radar missions
🛰️ The Canadian Space Agency is seeking bids for early definition work on two pathfinder satellites for RADARSAT+, Canada's next-generation Earth observation system. One will fly Ku-band radar and the other X-band.
📅 The solicitation went up on CanadaBuys on Oct. 26, the opening day of the National Earth Observation Forum. Bids close Dec. 7.
💰 The work builds on the $1.012 billion RADARSAT+ portfolio announced in 2023. It follows concept studies by C-CORE, Kepler Communications, MDA Space and Calian, and MDA Space's $688-million contract for an RCM replenishment satellite.

The Canadian Space Agency issues RFP for three priority technologies
🇨🇦 The Canadian Space Agency wants Canadian companies to develop three technologies for future missions, with up to $4 million on the table.
🔭 A lightweight mirror telescope for CubeSats that stays in focus as temperatures swing in orbit ($1M)
📷 Readout electronics for the detectors chosen for the proposed CASTOR space telescope ($1M)
❄️ A radar module for the Terrestrial Snow Mass Mission, a planned satellite to measure how much water is stored in Canada's snowpack ($2M)
🛰️ A fourth technology from the CSA's February draft list, a spectrometer to succeed ACE-FTS on SCISAT, is being sourced separately from ABB.
📅 Proposals are due Nov. 26.

🚀 Hire for the gap, not the title 💡 Advice to founders: Write the job description from the work, not the title
When a founder asks Iain Christie to look at a job posting for a first "real" hire, it almost always describes a title rather than a job. A generic sales manager or marketing manager description draws generic applicants, and months later the gap the founder meant to fill is still sitting there.
In his latest SpaceQ column, Iain Christie walks through the exercise he gives founders. It fits on one sheet of paper. 📝

U.S. Ambassador Hoekstra makes the case for Canada's sovereign push 🇨🇦 🛰️
At Space Canada's SpaceBound conference in Gatineau last week, U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra came with one message for Ottawa: Canada is making a mistake by going its own way.
🎤 He spent three minutes on tariffs before the moderator cut in: "Back to space."
🚀 He said Canada is "closing the market to SpaceX," even though Telesat has booked 14 Falcon 9 launches for Lightspeed.
⚠️ He praised Elon Musk's "excellence" a week after Ukraine's Starlink and Starshield terminals slowed in the middle of a war.
By the time he was done, he had made the case for why Ottawa is right.
In my latest Observer column, I explain why. 👇

16 deals show space SPACs have a poor record for investors 🚀📉
SpaceQ reviewed every space company that went public through a SPAC since 2009. Investors who kept their shares have lost money on 11 of the 16.
📊 Only three passed our scorecard: Rocket Lab, Iridium and Intuitive Machines
💵 Half are now worth about $2 or less per original $10 share
🔮 The companies booked about 21% of the revenue their SPAC pitches projected
🏢 All six that had less than $10 million of revenue when they listed failed
We also look at NorthStar Earth & Space, the newest space company to go public this way, and at the cheaper route Maritime Launch Services took in Canada 🇨🇦

🚀 Jeremy Hansen asks space sector to work like his Moon crew
At last night’s SpaceBound opening reception in Ottawa, Jeremy Hansen made a surprising admission about the Artemis II crew: “We were not a great team from the get-go.” 🌕
The turning point came months into training, when the four astronauts made a pact to “launch as friends and land as friends.” 🤝 Now he’s asking Canada’s space sector to do the same and find a common goal of its own. 🇨🇦

C-COM Q-band antenna tracks stratospheric cell platforms 📡
Ottawa's C-COM Satellite Systems has developed a vehicle-mounted Q-band antenna that follows communications platforms flying about 20 km up 🛰️
🎈 High-altitude platform stations (HAPS) act as airborne cell sites, and each one needs a ground gateway to reach the terrestrial network. C-COM's iNetVu 1200+ puts that gateway on a vehicle.

🇨🇦🇮🇳 Canada–India space deals stay small ahead of Modi visit
Minister Maninder Sidhu's trade mission to Mumbai and Bengaluru produced 34 deals worth close to $300 million. Space accounted for three MOUs from two Canadian companies: Sidhu said the two countries "don't compete with each other." In space, they do in parts of the market, and India's space budget is now more than twice Canada's 💰
🤝 The CSA–ISRO arrangement promised in March has no announced signing date but Modi arrives in Canada Dec. 11 as both sides push to close a trade deal by year-end.
