There is not a day I don't think about #MrRogers & others who have been great advocates for our children. I ask this question often "What would #MrRogers do?" I know some things would be a lot different! If only . . .#WWMRD theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…

Now that @AbdulElSayed has been elected to the U.S. Senate, let's flash back to 2007, when Bill Clinton praised Abdul El-Sayed for his University of Michigan speech. "I don't want to embarrass your senior speaker. But I wish every person in the world who believes that we are fated to have a clash of civilizations and cannot reach across the religious divides could've heard you speak today. I just wish every person in the world could've heard you speak today."

A 19-year-old Democrat has unseated a 16-year Republican incumbent in Massachusetts. Daniel Darris-O’Connor, a 2025 Billerica High graduate and UMass Lowell student, defeated Rep. Marc Lombardo by just 438 votes. He'll be one of the youngest lawmakers in state history.

He missed the school bus. So Brennan Walker, fourteen, walked the route from memory and got lost, and knocked on a door to ask for directions. A woman screamed. Her husband came down the stairs with a sh0tgun. Rochester Hills, Michigan. The morning of 12 April 2018. His phone was dead. He had never had to walk it before. He knocked. Through the glass he tried to explain he had missed the bus and needed to know which way the school was. The woman inside started shouting that he was trying to break in. Her husband, Jeffrey Zeigler, a retired firefighter, came downstairs with a sh0tgun. Brennan ran. Zeigler came out onto the porch and fired at the back of a running fourteen-year-old. The shot missed. It is on the house's own doorbell camera, which is why we are not relying on anybody's memory. Brennan kept running until he found someone to call his mother. Zeigler was charged and convicted of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and a firearm offence, and sentenced to four to ten years. Brennan's mother, Lisa Wright, said afterwards that she had taught him what to do if he got lost. Go to a house. Knock on a door. Ask an adult. Every parent teaches that. It is the single most basic instruction there is. He did it exactly right, and a man fired a shotgun at him for it. He was fourteen, and he was late for school. This is why in our book we confront the painful history too many people never hear. We must never forget these injustices Get yours: savvypurchase.samcart.com/pr…

Sixty-eight years ago, while signing copies of Stride Toward Freedom in Harlem, Daddy was stabbed in the chest with a letter opener and nearly lost his life. He survived, and what followed revealed something essential about his commitment to nonviolence. Even after experiencing violence so personally, he refused to allow hatred to determine his response. Nonviolence was not simply something my father preached. It was a discipline he chose, even when the cost was deeply personal. #MLK #Nonviolence365 #BelovedCommunity

Some people put their ideas out in the world and hope they catch on. Not Gloria Steinem. Through her writing, her speeches, and her organizing, she demanded that the world pay attention to all the ways that women had been — and in some cases, still are — treated unfairly. And she helped awaken us to problems like domestic violence, the lack of affordable child care, and unfair hiring practices that had too often been ignored or overlooked. Gloria really was larger than life. Today, generations of women are walking a little taller and aiming a little higher because of what she fought for and achieved. Michelle and I are thinking of her family today, and everyone — women and men — who were inspired by her towering example.
