If you grew up playing WIFFLE BALL in the 80s and 90s, this one's for you...
We didn't just play Wiffle ball.
We built STADIUMS in our backyards.
I remember mowing the grass on the LOWEST setting to outline our field. Eventually the grass would die, which absolutely pissed my dad off. 😂
We chalked batter's boxes. Made our own outfield distance signs.
Our HOUSE ROOF was the right-field home run fence. Left field? A portable fence we built ourselves.
We scraped together whatever money we could find for replacement Wiffle balls at the local hardware store.
We organized tournaments that lasted ALL SUMMER.
Ghost runners. Made-up ground rules. Hit the runner with the ball to get him OUT.
We argued calls like it was Game 7 of the World Series.
No umpires. No coaches. No adults organizing anything.
Just neighborhood kids, a plastic bat, a plastic ball, and an imagination that never ran out.
And looking back 30 years later, something hits me...
We were learning how to COMPETE. How to solve problems. How to make our own decisions. How to handle winning AND losing.
We were developing baseball instincts without a single lesson.
We were falling in love with the GAME without anybody telling us we needed to.
We just called it PLAYING.
Man, what I'd give for ONE MORE summer afternoon on those backyard fields. ⚾️
Who else grew up this way? Tell me about YOUR backyard stadium.

One thing I’ve learned over my coaching career: Hitters hit.
I’ve seen tons of kids grind in the cage every day but struggle in games year after year. Then I’ve seen guys who don’t put in nearly as much work but can flat-out hit.
Hard work matters, but some guys just have it.

There are a ton of travel baseball organizations and coaches, but many don’t have real college connections.
Posting players isn’t recruiting. Making calls, having credibility with college coaches and a track record of getting players into schools matters.

Baseball has become the only sport where someone can go 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts and someone will still post his exit velo.
At some point, we might want to start caring about actually being good at baseball again in games.

The velocity arms race in college baseball has cooled off. The new competitive edge is in pitch design and arsenal construction.
We analyzed all 308 D1 programs and here’s what the data says 🧵

We are becoming emotionally weaker because we are avoiding discomfort. That’s one of the major lessons from The Coddling of the American Mind. Modern culture teaches people to avoid pressure, criticism, failure, discomfort, and adversity. But avoiding hard things does NOT

12 reasons we don't put our players ages 12 and under in travel ball tournaments:
⚾ 5 games in a weekend might sound fun, but their bodies aren't ready for it, especially their arms
⚾ Arm overuse from limited to no rest, with pitchers throwing back to back days
⚾ Teaching leads and pickoffs to kids 10 and under wastes practice time that should go to fundamentals
⚾ Schedules dropped mid week, so families can't plan anything
⚾ Pool play Saturday, win or go home Sunday, a format that doesn't exist in high school, college, or anywhere after
⚾ Time limits turn coaches into clock managers, stalling with mound visits instead of just playing the game
⚾ Innings limits instead of pitch counts, as if a 30 pitch inning and a 10 pitch inning are the same thing
⚾ 8 hours at the complex for 2 games, and the whole day is gone
⚾ Constant fast food consumption because there's no time to eat real food
⚾ Mismatches just to fill divisions, so there's no parity and half the games are over by the second inning
⚾ Traveling 2 hours to play teams we could play 15 minutes from home
⚾ Hotels, gate fees, parking, all stacked on top of what you already paid
We ran tournament teams for 6 years before we figured this out.
We recently brought competitive travel back on our terms.
We built our own league. Real travel teams, Saturday doubleheaders, same opponents all season, everyone home by dinners. It's amazing.

It’s definitely worse. The coaches are working for certain travel ball teams, volitold their players to play for those teams and then big checks get playing time
