I only just learned that the CDW said priests should not give blessings in lieu of Communion during Mass. It's done and explicitly encouraged so often that I assumed it was an official thing.
Non-Catholics receiving Holy Communion in St. Peter’s Basilica today because some Americans decided to present themselves to the priest with their arms crossed, I guess to get a blessing, in a practice that is common in America but rare outside of the anglosphere, and one that makes no sense and should not happen at the distribution of Holy Communion.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The crossed-arms practice for seeking a blessing (not Communion) is used or instructed in France, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain and elsewhere, and appears in the video from St. Peter's. Vatican guidance discourages individual blessings during Communion distribution. adoremus.org/2009/02/on-giv… paroisse-maurice-bernard.fr/2025/10/31/lar… belgicatho.be/apps/print/520… poegham.wordpress.com/sacraments/the…

At a certain point, one must push back - these are not children, they are bishops. At best, this kind of speech is unwise, at worst directly and gravely scandalous. Omission can also be sin. You need to say "we want more Christians" - and if you can't do that in interviews, you need to ask the journalist to avoid that kind of question or else simply not do an interview. What if I am a Muslim in Oran or Algiers secretly considering baptism and then have the misfortune to find myself watching the local bishop seem to imply that I should stay Muslim? "Why doesn't he want conversions? Is Christianity a club for wealthy foreigners? Or for whites?" It is a problem, and level heads need to say this prudently and respectfully.

I’ve been reading through the various volumes of the Oxford History of the United States for some years now. It’s been such a rewarding experience. Just finished David Kennedy’s Freedom from Fear (1929-1945) and now on to James T. Patterson’s Grand Expectations (1945-1974). It’s a rewarding project to tackle and I recommend it for anyone who loves American history. I’ve read every volume from the founding to 1945. There’s one that remains unpublished—Bruce Schulman’s Reawakened Nation (1896-1929). Hoping it’s finished soon. Onward!

"Satan fell from heaven in the beginning; by the just sentence of his Creator he fell, against whom he had rebelled. And when he had succeeded in gaining man to join him in his rebellion, and his Maker came to save him, then his brief hour of triumph came, and he made the most of it. When the Holiest had taken flesh, and was in his power, then in his revenge and malice he determined, as he himself had been struck down by the Almighty arm, to strike in turn a heavy blow at Him who struck him. Therefore it was that Jesus fell down so suddenly. O dear Lord, by this Thy first fall raise us all out of sin, who have so miserably fallen under its power. ... Satan had a second fall, when our Lord came upon earth. By that time he had usurped the dominion of the whole world—and he called himself its king. And he dared to take up the Holy Saviour in his arms, and show Him all kingdoms, and blasphemously promise to give them to Him, His Maker, if He would adore him. Jesus answered, 'Begone, Satan!'—and Satan fell down from the high mountain. And Jesus bare witness to it when He said, 'I saw Satan, as lightning, falling from heaven.' The Evil One remembered this second defeat, and so now he smote down the Innocent Lord a second time, now that he had Him in his power. O dear Lord, teach us to suffer with Thee, and not be afraid of Satan's buffetings, when they come on us from resisting him. ... Satan will have a third and final fall at the end of the world, when he will be shut up for good in the everlasting fiery prison. He knew this was to be his end—he has no hope, but despair only. He knew that no suffering which he could at that moment inflict upon the Saviour of men would avail to rescue himself from that inevitable doom. But, in horrible rage and hatred, he determined to insult and torture while he could the great King whose throne is everlasting. Therefore a third time he smote Him down fiercely to the earth. O Jesus, Only-begotten Son of God, the Word Incarnate, we adore with fear and trembling and deep thankfulness Thy awful humiliation, that Thou who art the Highest, should have permitted Thyself, even for one hour, to be the sport and prey of the Evil One." -St. John Henry Newman, Short Meditations on the Stations of the Cross

Ludicrous and vile, but I may prefer this honest hostility to the religious indifferentism that enables modern Anglican friendliness twd the Catholic Church
.@Bruvvereccles. Yeah, Our Lord was always sending out disciples to subvert Christian countrries, and aid murderous plots against their Christian monarchs, because they disagreed with Eccles about transubstantiation.

You can cancel an election and ban the winner from running (Romania), you can ban your opponents from ever running again (Hungary), you can threaten to ban the main opposition party and subject it to relentless investigations by the secret police (Germany), you can threaten a ban on the leading presidential candidate and make them wear an ankle monitor (France), every member of your circle can be investigated for corruption (Spain), you can try and cancel local elections because you will lose them (Britain), and you can storm the constitutional court with riot police because you want to control it (Poland). You can just do all these things. The secret is you just have to be on the right side of the European Commission.

"We recall that Original Sin was the effect of Satan’s malicious desire to separate us from our origin, from our Father in Heaven, or said another way, to throw off the Fatherhood of God. Jesus, the perfect child and Son of God, comes into the world to reestablish that severed bond of love. The current unrelenting attack on “patriarchy” reminds us of the devil’s scheme, and the Father’s wise and loving remedy for our salvation: the Son reveals God to us as Father, and the cure for sin is the self-giving love of the Son at Calvary. Through the Paschal Mystery, we become adopted children of God. This grace is our patrimony, 'the gift of the father' (pater + munus, in the Latin)." Fr. Paul Check

Between the Brazil stuff and this, it is not often that one sees so many examples of brazen liberal authoritarianism in such short a time
🇵🇱 Poland's pro-EU Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has ordered a raid on the offices of the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw, prompting President Karol Nawrocki to turn his plane around mid-flight. The court is responsible for ensuring that parliamentary legislation complies with the Polish Constitution.

Baldwin of Canterbury, Treatise 6 Est ergo verbum in Patre, verbum in ore, verbum in corde. It is, therefore, a Word in the Father; a Word in the mouth and a Word in the heart.

The Cross of Lorraine, a symbol of the French Resistance, can still be seen carved on the trunks of beeches in the woods of Chambord
