Before streaming platforms, cloud storage and modern content delivery became everyday infrastructure, there was a much simpler idea: let the people sharing the data help deliver it. That idea became BitTorrent. In 2001, Bram Cohen introduced the BitTorrent protocol, changing how large files could move across the internet. Instead of relying on one central server to deliver an entire file, BitTorrent allowed users to exchange pieces of that file with one another. The result was a more efficient peer-to-peer distribution model that could make better use of the bandwidth already available across the network. And the growth was remarkable. By January 2011, BitTorrent and µTorrent had reached 100 million active monthly users, with more than 20 million daily active users and clients connecting from over 220 countries every day. Less than a year later, the combined ecosystem had passed 150 million active monthly users. Then came another major milestone. In 2020, BitTorrent surpassed 2 billion client installations across Windows, Mac and Android. That history matters because @BitTorrent was never simply about downloading files. The underlying technology demonstrated something much bigger: a global network can distribute data by putting users and their available bandwidth to work. Over the years, the protocol has also been used beyond ordinary file sharing. BitTorrent has highlighted applications ranging from software and firmware distribution to gaming updates, scientific datasets and large-scale data transfers. Today, BitTorrent says its applications across the BitTorrent and µTorrent brands have been downloaded more than 2 billion times, while the protocol continues to power a significant share of global internet traffic. And now, 25 years after the protocol was born, the story continues. BitTorrent is celebrating 25 years of sharing with a limited-time 25% OFF Pro annual plan promotion for BitTorrent and µTorrent. Use code 25FOR25 at checkout. But there’s a catch: The offer expires August 25, 2026 at 00:00 UTC. So if you've been part of the swarm for years, or you’re discovering BitTorrent for the first time, this is the final window to claim the anniversary discount. Visit BitTorrent 25 years later, the idea is still remarkably simple: don't just connect to the internet. Help power it. #BitTorrent #TRONEcoStar @BitTorrent @justinsuntron
