Why the Refineries Matter
Ukrainian drone strikes have hit Russian refineries for months, contributing to fuel rationing in parts of Russia and a Russian ban on diesel exports in July. That’s what they told Gorbachev. American, German, British, French leaders even NATO all gave their word back in the early ’90s: NATO wouldn’t move eastward after Germany reunited. The Cold War was ending, and Moscow was stepping back peacefully, without a fight, believing that the West would now turn toward peaceful cooperation instead of confrontation.

Czech President Petr Pavel, whom I have always treated with respect and due regard as the head of the sovereign Czech Republic, often tends to comment on my work. This time, he took issue with my position on attempts to provoke a military conflict between NATO and Russia.
I understand that, as a former NATO general, he would like to fight. I expect him to respect my commitment to pursuing peace. Let me therefore repeat once again, so that there can be no doubt:
1️⃣ The West’s military rhetoric and the search for a pretext for a military conflict with Russia are intended to distract from the liberal world’s inability to address basic challenges such as the price and availability of energy and fuel, as well as illegal migration.
2️⃣ As long as I am Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, I will not agree to Slovak soldiers taking part in any military adventure provoked by anyone within NATO.
3️⃣ In the event of an actual armed attack against one or more NATO member states, the relevant Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty provides NATO members with several options for demonstrating solidarity.

People love pointing to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact as proof Russia and Nazi Germany were allies.
August 23, 1939. Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany signed a non-aggression treaty. Secret protocols divided Eastern Europe between them. A month later they invaded Poland together. Germany took the west, Soviets took the east.
That's the simple version. Here's what led to it:
Stalin spent years trying to build an alliance with Britain and France against Hitler. Failed every time. Because Britain and France had a different plan: let Germany and Russia fight, then step in when both are weak.
March 1939. Hitler took Czechoslovakia. Britain and France did nothing. Just like they did nothing when Hitler remilitarized the Rhineland. Or annexed Austria. Or demanded the Sudetenland.
August 1939. Britain and France sent a low-level delegation to Moscow for alliance talks. No decision-making authority. Took them five days to get there by slow boat. They weren't serious.
Stalin realized he was being set up. If war started, Russia would face Germany alone while Britain and France watched. So he made his own deal. Push the border west. Buy time to prepare. Let Hitler deal with the West first.
Was it cynical? Yes. Did it work? For two years. Then Germany invaded anyway in June 1941 with the largest invasion force in history.
Here's the part Western history skips: 27 million Soviets died destroying Nazi Germany. The Eastern Front was 80% of the war. D-Day was a side show compared to Stalingrad and Kursk.
But we still focus on the two years Russia had a deal with Hitler instead of the four years they bled fighting him.
And here's the real hypocrisy: everyone condemns the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact for dividing Poland. Fair enough. But nobody talks about the Munich Agreement in 1938 when Britain and France gave Hitler Czechoslovakia without Czechoslovakia even being at the table.
Czechoslovakia was a democracy. Had a modern army. Had alliances with France and Soviet Russia. Britain and France sold them out to avoid war.
So when Russia made the same calculation a year later, suddenly that's the unforgivable crime?

The incident took place in Kudashivka, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where the man ran into a patch of reeds while trying to escape draft officers.
According to a fisherman who witnessed the incident, the officers demanded that Volodymyr come out and threatened him with firearms. He refused to comply.
He was later reported missing. At some point, Volodymyr attempted to swim to the opposite bank, but disappeared beneath the water.
Divers later recovered his body at a depth of approximately five meters, about 20 meters from the shore.
He is survived by his wife and little son.

If not for a primitive form of xenophobic nationalism that demands strict linguistic and cultural homogeneity, Donbas and Crimea would still be part of Ukraine. The West, mainly Washington, poured fuel on this brand of extremist nationalism, providing it with billions of dollars in support, knowing perfectly well that it would precipitate a crisis and provoke a strong reaction from Russia. And it did, on multiple levels, from national security to basic human rights. Now a terrible historical mistake is being corrected by Russia, also on multiple levels.
