Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab takfired those who visited shrines for purposes of istighatha, as well as those who protected these shrines. On these grounds he waged jihad against the Ottomans and their allies. However, now the Wahhabis of Syria are ensuring that pilgrims can visit shrines like Sayyida Zaynab for istighatha (a place that they previously referred to as a "Shia shirk temple" requiring destruction). This is what always must be kept in mind when dealing with the Syrian Wahhabi: religion is simply a tool to be manipulated for political purposes.
