Something I think is particularly awful about the Garden- and something I think is so important to the story thematically- is how they took Yor in as a vulnerable child but offered her no sense of family or community whatsoever. She was isolated, never developed proper social skills or given a proper education. It looks as if Gympie was in a similar situation, coming out of Project Apple with a poisonous body, she must've had nowhere else to turn. Yor's growth through her family is having a healthy influence on Gympie and Hemlock, but the Shopkeeper is only tolerant of it so long that it does not interfere with their work. I don't know what Endo's plans for the Shopkeeper are, but I truly hope he will explore how evil this all is. The Shopkeeper isn't a father figure, the Garden isn't a family. And that's why it's so impactful that Yor now has one. Of course, she has Yuri, but they both need more than that. And Yuri has his own social issues, as well as Loid, and Anya. The common denominator between is that they all come from environments that see them as nothing more as tools for the pursuit of a 'better world', but their real purpose and happiness comes from each other.
