OPINION: China’s export strength is reshaping global trade and opening new opportunities
Walk into a Kenyan shop, construction site, factory or electronics store and one thing is increasingly difficult to miss. China is everywhere.
From smart phones and solar equipment to machinery, vehicles, household goods, and industrial technology, Chinese products are part of everyday life. For millions of consumers and businesses, Chinese manufacturing has also made once-expensive products and technologies more accessible.
But China’s growing export strength is about more than the goods leaving its factories. It is reshaping global trade and creating opportunities that countries such as Kenya and the wider African continent should explore.

Chinese smartphones help narrow digital divide in Africa📱
Millions of mobile phones are assembled annually at Transsion's factory located on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, supplying both the local market and neighboring countries. Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Transsion, Xiaomi, and Honor have made mobile devices significantly more affordable and accessible to African customers, helping narrow the continent's digital divide.
According to data from technology research firm Omdia, smartphone shipments in Africa reached 84.4 million units in 2025. Transsion ranked first with 40.5 million shipments, capturing a 48 percent market share, while Xiaomi, Honor, and OPPO secured the third through fifth positions, respectively.
Inside Transsion's office in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, staff members test the imaging performance of smartphones, using standard light boxes equipped with color calibration cards, Maasai wooden carvings, plaid fabrics, masks, and other culturally distinct items. The Chinese smartphone maker has customized camera lens components for dark-skinned demographics, continually developing and optimizing photography and video technologies tailored to African aesthetics.
For Kenyan content creator Faith Mwikali Munywoki, a smartphone has become an indispensable "personal assistant" in both work and daily life. "My work relies entirely on this Chinese smartphone. Without downloading third-party software, I can just shoot multiple videos, and the phone automatically completes the editing."
"Smartphones are no longer just communication tools; they are wallets, cameras, entertainment devices, and gateways to the internet," said Phillip Mbuthia Ranja, an AI industry analyst in Kenya. He noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a practical utility in everyday life, and that Africa's smartphone penetration rate has surged thanks to Chinese brands, helping more citizens bridge the digital divide.
