For about a week, three people lived in the front seat of a U-Haul in a Walmart parking lot. The mother drove. The older brother sat in the middle. The youngest slept against the passenger door. They could not run the engine for the air conditioning, so in the afternoons they walked around inside the Walmart. The kid against the door is six foot seven now. His name is Darnell Washington, he plays tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and this morning in France he caught a touchdown in a Steelers win. Mike DeFabo wrote the rest of it down. The family had been evicted. He finished his freshman year sleeping on a friend's couch, and when that friend moved they packed the truck without knowing where they were going. After the parking lot they scraped together enough for a few nights at a motel. Here is how he says it. "I was homeless a lot." "I probably can't even put a number on how many apartments we lost." The family moved every four or five months. He was in foster care until the third grade. He enrolled at Desert Pines High School in Nevada as a sophomore and was selling raffle tickets for the football team when an assistant coach named David Hill found him in the weight room. Hill asked where they were living. Then he started paying their rent out of his own pocket, chased down donated shoes, and sometimes put the family up in his own house. Here is what Washington says about that. "If he didn't do that, we'd be back on the streets." In his first year at that school he won a state championship in football, a state championship in basketball, and a state title in the shot put. Then Georgia, where he won two national championships and mostly blocked, because Brock Bowers was there and the ball went to Brock Bowers. "When I wasn't getting the ball more, I had to embrace something." The Steelers took him in the third round in 2023. Now the brother. Ezekiel is a year older. He got straight A's, he ran training laps carrying a weighted pack, and Darnell says he always did the right thing. Ezekiel joined the Marines. So Darnell made him a promise. The first time he ever scored in the NFL, whatever else happened, he was going to salute. In September of 2024 he caught a five yard pass against Denver for the first touchdown of his career, stood up in the end zone, and saluted. "I saluted for my brother. He serves right now in Washington D.C." "So I just told him the first touchdown, that's what I'm going do. So that's what I did." Be straight about what he is. He caught 57 passes in his first three seasons combined. He is a blocker who scores about once a year, and this is his fourth season. But in June the Steelers gave him four years and 42 million dollars, and a man who spent a week of his childhood sleeping upright in a parking lot does not have to wonder where he is staying tonight. Good morning, hockey fans. Sidney Crosby makes some more history tonight. Most seasons in Pittsburgh, in any sport: Sidney Crosby — 22 Willie Stargell — 21 Evgeni Malkin — 21 Kris Letang — 21 Roberto Clemente — 18 Honus Wagner — 18 Ben Roethlisberger — 18 Look at those names. On Sid, who is basically the captain of the hockey world at this point. But most importantly to him, he’s done it all these years in the same place. Willie Stargell was 39 years old in 1979 and still helped lead Pittsburgh to a World Series championship while sharing the National League MVP award. "Pops" wasn't simply the veteran voice in the clubhouse. He was still producing at an MVP level for the team that won it all. That's what makes the 1979 highlights so much better than a normal late-career tribute.

People asking why would you count Lemieux’s Cups as an owner? He was no regular ordinary owner. No one has ever accomplished this. In 1999, the Penguins were in Chapter 11 bankruptcy with well over $120 MILLION in debt 🚫. Mario was the team’s largest unsecured creditor. They owed him $32.5 MILLION in deferred salary. Instead of taking it and walking away, Mario converted $20M owed to him into ownership of the team, forgave roughly $7.5M he was owed and put his own money at risk 🤯. He started with 25% ownership and eventually grew his stake to 40%. The NHLs back-up plan would've moved the team to Portland, Oregon 🌄 😳 And unlike your typical bankruptcy where creditors will get pennies on the dollar, owner Mario made sure the people owed money were made whole. Mellon Arena staff workers received 100% of the money they were owed 🌐 By 2005, all other creditors had been repaid the full amounts owed under the bankruptcy plan 🫰 By 2007, the Pens needed a replacement for Mellon Arena. Kansas City made Mario an offer: the Penguins could play in the new Sprint Center rent-free, with no construction costs or upfront arena payment and access to substantial building revenue. Lemieux instead signed a 30-year arena lease committing the Penguins to Pittsburgh 🏙️ In 2021, sold the team at: $900M 40% stake ≈ $360M ✅ Mario turned money a bankrupt team couldn’t pay him into ownership, helped make the people owed money whole, kept the Penguins in Pittsburgh and won 3 more Stanley Cups as an owner. 📝💰🏆🏆🏆 Play without fear and I'll see ya at center ice. That’s one hell of a receipt. 🧾 🥶

"When Clemente die it was so big in Puerto Rico people stop everything. Nobody have any more parties for New Year's. Everybody go to the beach to try to find him. Try to find the body or at least something. I remember we went out with a group of people. Neighbours, friends, all out on a boat. The waves were so high and people would jump in the water and swim down with their scuba gear 20-30 feet into the water. They helped me put on the gear and I jumped in, and I swam down and when I got deep enough, I saw these massive sharks and I immediately came back up. We were out there for a long time. The current was so strong, you would’ve thought it was a tsunami. It was tough for all of us. One thing I’ll never forget is that Roberto was so afraid of flying. He would always tell me: "Manny, I have this feeling that when I fly, the plane is going to crash." And look, it’s terrible, but it’s what happened. I was really hurt for Roberto`s wife. Vera went to beach every day, too, to pray or see what she could do. I think she is still going down there. Clemente is still on the ballclub. His spirit belong here and he gives his life for somebody he don't know." Manuel de Jesus Magan Sanguillen. Sanguillen did not attend Clemente’s funeral. Instead, he chose to go diving were the plane crashed, in hopes of finding his friend, whose body was never found.
