It isn't all doom and gloom. Local Legends doing good work.
The busiest single-track rail route in the UK connects the 2 biggest cities in Northern Ireland, moving at an average speed of 44mph.
With budget talks underway, how does any of this help Northern Ireland? How does it help secure funding for much-needed public transport infrastructure, like reopening the Knockmore Line?

Since @PLACENI closed in 2019, Belfast and Northern Ireland have lost an important focal point for good ideas about our towns and cities.
There are plenty of people with ideas for making places better, but no shared platform to bring them together.
We need something like PLACE again.

Still wild that the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company owns this site beside the railway line @abbeycentre.
@ANBorough has already identified it as a potential location for a future rail halt in its Local Development Plan, yet @Translink_NI has no current plans for it.
North Belfast has around five miles of railway running through it without a single stop. That feels like a huge missed opportunity.

A station on derelict land at ShoreRd/LongwoodRd. Currently land is being used to store railway sleepers. The station would integrate with local bus services and connect with Greenways: Loughshore Path and Glas na Braden Glen.
Great bit of local railway history. It would be fantastic to see a station return to this area.
There’s actually land beside Abbey Centre owned by the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHC) that could be used for a new station.
The railway already runs past it, and a station here would serve Abbey Centre and the surrounding communities, giving people another option besides the car.
It would also make a great stop on the proposed Belfast Circle Line.

No data has been gathered on the impact of allowing more taxis in some Belfast bus lanes, despite Stormont saying it would collect the information.

@LizKimminsSF why is your department failing to address the vital and immediate need for railway projects despite claiming to promote active and car-free travel? 🤔

Lisburn West, Tillysburn and Gamble Street. All identified as potential new railway stations in the Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan published in 2004.
Lisburn West is finally expected to open in 2028, some 24 years later.
But what happened to Tillysburn and Gamble Street(Cathedral Qtr)? And why aren't new stations being addressed in the ETP 2035?
Good to see @RobinSwann_MP raising the omission of the Knockmore Line from DfI's new transport plans.
The Department is already developing a business case to reopen the line, including a rail link to Belfast International Airport.
So why isn't it reflected in the Eastern Transport Plan(2035)?
The Knockmore Line is also central to the proposed Belfast Circle Line.

Here's something odd.
Belfast's 2004 local transport plan included rail frequencies, new stations and infrastructure improvements.
The new Eastern Transport Plan largely excludes rail planning because it's considered a regional matter.
But surely local rail journeys are part of local transport?
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has set out a vision for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient transport network.
The Minister was speaking as the Transport Strategy 2035 was published and as she launched the consultation of the draft Eastern Transport Plan (ETP) 2035.

Apparently there is an attack on the motorist?
Are DFI plans to pedestrianise parts of Belfast city centre forward thinking or an attack on the motorist?

Posnett St, Belfast, beside a train station.
Current plan: 28 semi-detached homes.
Alternative: a 4-storey courtyard block delivering ~100 homes with shared green space.
We have a housing shortage but still treat city centre land like suburbia.
The all encompassing mega thread on the Posnett Street Clanmill Social housing develpment planned for a former car park just off botanic avenue and why I believe it should be refused planning permission. 🧵

The bold “experiment” (8 metal signs) taking place in Hill St. Belfast* is set to continue for a further 6 months until May 2027.
Expect similar mind blowing alchemy from the Easter Transport Plan ‘35.

Back in 2004, the Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan identified the single-track Dargan Bridge as a bottleneck restricting train frequencies.
22 years later, it's still single track.
Odd that such a longstanding issue isn't addressed in the new Eastern Transport Plan 2035.

Back in 2004, Belfast's Metropolitan Transport Plan(2015) included proposals for more frequent trains, new stations, the Dargan Bridge upgrade and even a Circle Line.
Fast forward 22 years and the Eastern Transport Plan 2035 largely excludes rail planning.
How is that progress?

£100m for a bypass just 4km long.
The concept images even show a greenway for walking and cycling alongside it. It feels like a bit of a greenwashing, box-ticking exercise.
Why would people walking or cycling want to bypass the town centre, its shops and amenities? Surely making Cookstown itself easier to walk and cycle around would be more useful?
The estimated cost of the Cookstown bypass has jumped by more than £30 million in less than a year.
The Department for Infrastructure announced on Tuesday that the scheme’s outline business case had been approved on October 13 with a cost estimate of £100.1 million.

If this were true then pedestrianising Donegall Place would make more sense than any of the other proposals. Instead the approach to city hall will be a 2-way road.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has said the draft Eastern Transport Plan (ETP) builds on the success of the Fleadh and shows how transforming public spaces can unlock social, cultural and economic benefits.
