With the confirmation of a third national lockdown, we've decided to bring back our weekly #CitiesOnScreen viewing sessions with @CAWatson_. With the cultural sector in an incredibly precarious position, it feels vital to keep engaging and showing our appreciation

We're loving all the #MyFirstCinema memories tonight. There's a special connection to that first place where you sat in the dark and saw the world and it's stories cast across the big screen.
What's yours?
In a break from normal proceedings, on Thu we joined the audience for the first @theurbansalon of 2021, run out of @UCLurbanlab. Focusing on the post-Covid city, the all-woman panel was excellently helmed by @LorettaCLees and @MoniDegen
@dbornat of @ZCD_Architects presentation demonstrated the importance of adopting youth-centred planning and design approaches after C-19, highlighting the neglect of young people’s wellbeing and the hardships they've endured
This week we watched Capital in the 21st Century (dir. @justinsight, 2020), a fascinating #documentary adaptation of the best-selling book by leading economist Thomas Piketty (@PikettyLeMonde)
A key takeaway for us as urbanists was the role of the financialisation of land, as lower risk capital accumulation, and its impact on the housing crisis and displacement - especially in big #cities

Enjoyed this @UCLurbanlab double bill: Bassem Saad’s dystopian vision responds to Lebanon’s ongoing garbage crisis, Sophia Stamatopoulou-Robbins and Ali Aldeek's film explores the politics of waste in occupied Palestine. Looking forward to live Q&A later! dochouse.org/cinema/screenin…

It broke my heart to receive this phone call this lady was lonely & wanted to return to classic cinema club. It’s important we value the need for human contact for many elderly people attending a group is all they have. Community groups offer friendship, company & conversation.
We received a call recently from one of our elderly classic club members who’s missing the films and the company. We really miss our afternoon Classic Cinema and plan to return soon when guidelines allow.

for peckhamites, community activists, and all those challenging stereotypes of regeneration and community gentrification
A great series of short films by @GeorgeOkello featuring @PeckhamVision @slumflower Eileen Conn and many more...

Just watched this short record of the 1980 #NottingHillCarnival. It made me sad about how this cultural event for West Indian + Caribbean migrants has been marketed for + coopted so much by the white middle classes who've colonised the area player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/…
I have been to carnival almost every year since birth as my family were some of those early gentrifiers. It's a huge part of my life, instilling in me a deep love of soca + dancehall, but that's easy to say as a rich, white millennial who...
...doesn't have to experience any of the systematically racist abuse + oppression that comes with being black in London. #Carnival now is marketed as an event 'for London' but it isn't really. It's a lot of #CulturalTourism by white ppl who still uphold these racist structures.
