One command shows whether Windows tells your SSD to clear deleted files. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as administrator and paste:
fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
0 means TRIM is on, and a deleted file is usually gone for good. 1 means it's off. Reply with yours.
Recovered a video and it won't play? Sometimes the file has lost the information a player needs to decode it. Video Repair in Disk Drill can take that from a healthy clip shot on the same camera with the same settings, through Clever Online Video Repair.
Full Disk Access ≠ Background Activity on Mac.
Full Disk Access lets Disk Drill scan the folders macOS protects, so deleted files there can be found.
Background Activity lets its helpers run for S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and alerts. It doesn't give access to your files.

Recovered your video, but it still won't play? Sometimes the file is back, but the recording itself is damaged. Data recovery and video repair are two different things.
We've got both covered: Disk Drill for recovery and Clever Online Video Repair for damaged recordings. 🔧

💡 Did you know that scanning a failing hard drive can actually make things worse?
If your drive starts acting up, remember: creating a Byte-to-Byte image first lets you recover files from a copy without repeatedly scanning the original.
A small detail that could save your data! 💾

Ever noticed the little stars ⭐ next to files in Disk Drill’s scan results? They’re called Recovery Chances. They estimate how likely each file is to be recovered successfully, helping you decide where to start.
You can also preview files before recovering them. 👇

Can a photo still be recovered even if its original filename is gone? Yes.
A filename and the actual contents of a file are separate pieces of information. So even when the original name can no longer be recovered, Disk Drill may still be able to reconstruct and recover the photo itself.
The name may be lost. The photo doesn't have to be. 📸

Oops, I did it again...
I deleted all the video files from my SD card before I actually had them backed up on my NAS.
Here's how I recovered them, trying photorec, untrunc, and eventually Disk Drill: jeffgeerling.com/blog/2025/r…
📽️Got a video file that won’t play?
Disk Drill now lets you send corrupted videos for repair directly from the app (Mac & Windows).

Good news! After messing with photorec, untrunc, various fun ffmpeg incantations, etc... I found a GUI app, "Disk Drill", that has 'Advanced Camera Recovery' and pulled the files right back from the dead.
I was _close_ with the open source utilities, but the app finished it off

So, yesterday one of my disks decided to die. And this bastard did it! The problem was the data because the disk was my backup for some old but important information. Thanks to the gods for Claude and Disk Drill - I recovered all the important stuff. Now I'm thinking about a proper NAS with RAID because you never know when your backup drive will decide to die

I want to put a huge shoutout and a massive THANK YOU to @Cleverfiles
I accidently deleted my entire OneDrive folder and my computer NEVER backed up.
I panicked for the first few hours and a buddy told me about Disk Drill.
I got all my legal writings back. Y'all ROCK

Whew! Got a little itchy with the 'Delete' button and accidentally sent some photos to the ether. Thankfully Disk Drill pulled them from the brink for me 😮💨.

Here’s a piece of software I can wholeheartedly recommend — it has saved my work more than once, including today. An external drive failed, but I was able to recover all the material from my camera’s memory card, even though it had already been formatted twice. 🙌 @Cleverfiles
