The energy transition has to work for our communities. We know what happened in the 80s when economic transition was done badly and was done to communities.
That won't happen under this government. The transition will be led by the workers as we work with unions like @GMB_union.
Earlier in the week, I spoke at the @ClimateAPPG reception on A Worker-led Transition.
Many thanks to @KatieJWhite for joining the APPG to discuss COP31. With @UNEP warning that overshooting 1.5C is now inevitable, the UK must step up domestic action on fossil fuel phase-out to lead internationally. We look forward to seeing the UK increase ambition at COP in Nov
A great turnout yesterday for our reception with Climate Jobs UK. We heard the case for a worker-led energy transition from:
Afzal Khan MP
@Miatsf
@ProspectUnion Sue Ferns
@GMB_union and Climate Jobs UK’s Dave Douglas
Uplift’s Rosie Hampton
We launched our 'Goals for Industrial Renewal' - a vision for an energy transition that delivers for workers and their communities by putting workers' voices at the heart of industrial strategy.
On Tuesday, the APPG is pleased to welcome @KatieJWhite for a roundtable on COP31 and international climate action.
Below we explain the key issues to be discussed at the negotiations 🧵👇
Triple COP year 🗻🌊
COP17 of the nature agreement UNCBD is taking place from 19-30 October, and COP17 of the desertification agreement UNCCD took place in August. Nations will want to connect the three environment COPs into a coherent programme at COP31.

Fantastic to see APPG Vice-Chairs and members hold the Government to account in Parliament on the approval of the Jackdaw gas field yesterday.
Member @EllieChowns was clear with @andyburnham that Jackdaw won’t bring down bills but will add to heatwaves hitting the UK.
Member @BrianLeishmanMP made clear that the way to bring down energy bills is for the government to invest in renewable energy not approve more fossil fuels.
Member @NadiaWhittomeMP rounded out the contributions by reminding @mgshanks that the North Sea is a declining basin and cannot fund the energy transition we need. Instead we need significant government investment in clean energy.
