Kathy Bates says she was sure she never thanked her mother in her Misery Oscar speech, then the interviewer showed her the tape "She gave up her retirement because I was born so late in life to them." "When I won the Oscar for Misery, she said, I don't know what all the excitement about, you didn't discover the cure for cancer." "Why did I think I didn't thank her?" "Because she should have had my life." "I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she'd given up." Her mom's whole review of the Oscar was that she didn't cure cancer, and Kathy still believed she had shorted her that night. Then she watches herself thank her mom at home, right there in the speech. Some people never stop trying to pay their parents back. You can hear it in how quiet she gets at the end. ft: @CBSSunday CBS Sunday Morning on youtube

Being told she had no talent and would never get anywhere turned out to be a big advantage for her. Sigourney Weaver, on leaving Yale with zero expectations. Her friends from Yale showed up in New York expecting to be the second coming. She showed up not expecting any work at all, and was thinking about a bakery job or being a bank teller. So at every audition she figured she wouldn't get it and just did what she wanted. She calls it fearless because she had no illusions. I think a lot of young actors walk in carrying too much expectation, and it shows in the room. Expecting nothing left her free to take risks. ft: @sagaftraFOUND SAG-AFTRA Foundation on youtube

Demi Moore says she got shamed for her paychecks twice. Striptease made it look like she had betrayed women, and then G.I. Jane made it look like she had betrayed men. She says the money was never about being paid equal to a man, just being paid what she had earned. Then people started tearing G.I. Jane down months before it came out, before anyone had even seen it. Her read is that you don't get to have too much. I think she's right, and it's still happening to actresses now. They build you up, tear you down, and then act surprised when you come back.

Ethan Hawke says there's a direct correlation in his career: the more he loves a project, the less he gets paid. His point is about the algorithm. The big money goes to whatever the algorithm already wants. A movie like Blue Moon gets made anyway, and then the people behind it are humbly begging you to watch it. Doing Shakespeare on stage pays a couple hundred bucks a week, and he still calls it a gift. That's the deal for anyone making smaller films right now. The work people keep rewatching for twenty years is rarely the work that paid best, and his own career is a pretty good example.

The host brought up an old conversation where Hawke named the roles he's proudest of, like Boyhood, the Before trilogy, First Reformed and Dead Poets Society, and asked if Blue Moon had joined the list. This was his answer. source: One More Question on youtube

He won't go around telling people how bad addiction is, because he had a great time while he was high, right up until he didn't. Samuel L. Jackson, on how he got clean. He was understudying a play he had done the lead in at Yale, sitting on the back steps of the Broadway theater listening to another actor do it. Then the show won Tonys, and he broke. His wife found him passed out on the floor, and he was in rehab the next day. After 28 days he went straight to work on Jungle Fever, with the rehab staff telling him he'd be right back. Most recovery stories skip the part where the drugs were fun. He doesn't, and that's why this one lands. ft: @Palomafaith Mad Sad Bad on youtube

Kevin Costner says he never wanted to give Whitney Houston's eulogy, and he hated himself for saying yes. For a week after she died, everyone was on TV talking about her. He stayed quiet because to him it was a make believe relationship from a movie. Then Dionne Warwick called, her voice broken, and he said yes before she could finish asking. He wrote on the plane all night and was miserable for four days. He's glad he did it, but he still wishes he had said no. Most people would never admit that about a eulogy this famous. I respect him more for saying it out loud. ft: @HowardStern The Howard Stern Show on youtube

She was looking back on the Striptease and G.I. Jane years during her career retrospective at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Right after this she talks about her mother dying and her marriage ending around the same time, and why she stepped back. source: Conversations at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation on youtube

Susan Sarandon says that when something goes wrong on a set, women try to fix it and men try to figure out whose fault it is. She said it on Talking Pictures from HBO Max. She hedges it herself, so this isn't a blanket rule. Anyone who has worked on a crew has seen both reactions to a problem, though. Is she describing men and women, or just good and bad coworkers? ft: @hbomax Talking Pictures on youtube

He was about to hit send on an obituary for one close friend when the phone rang, and it was another close friend calling from hospice to say goodbye. Billy Crystal, on the year he just had. Bill Farley did his hair and makeup on every movie Crystal made. He said he had maybe a week, thanked him for the life they had together, and signed off with "when I see you again, I'll give you a trim." Bill hung up, and Crystal pressed send. Then he gets to losing Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, and he can't really finish the sentences. He says it'll never be okay. A comedian that quick running out of words tells you more than any speech could. ft: @CBSSunday CBS Sunday Morning on youtube

Sharon Stone says she will never get over seeing her 17-year-old prom date in his casket with their prom picture in his pocket. A drunk driver ran him off the road on his motorcycle and kept going. The night it happened, she sat up on the edge of the sofa until dawn because she already knew something was wrong. At the funeral she saw his football team standing in the back, thought they were all children, and walked out without saying a word. People mostly know the movie star. This is a teenage girl finding out in one morning that being young was over for her. Some grief stays with you for the rest of your life, and she's still carrying this one. ft: @andersoncooper All There Is on youtube

Bryan Cranston says when fans tell him they were on Walter White's side the whole way, he asks them what the hell is wrong with them. He breaks down how Breaking Bad worked on you. First you feel sorry for a broke, lonely school teacher with terminal cancer. Then the show keeps pushing to see how far you'll follow him, until a lot of viewers turn and start hoping Hank finds him. By the end Walt admits he did it for himself and he was good at it. I get why people stayed with him. The show spent five seasons making you complicit, and some viewers just never got off the ride. That's the uncomfortable part, and it's a big reason people still argue about it.

Hollywood keeps remaking the wrong movies. Leave the classics alone and go remake the ones that had a great idea and blew it. Some of the best remakes ever came from movies nobody was precious about. John Carpenter's The Thing came out of a 1951 creature feature. Cronenberg's The Fly came out of a 1958 Vincent Price movie. Scarface was a 1932 gangster picture long before Pacino got his hands on it. Now look at what happens when a studio goes after a movie people already love. Gus Van Sant remade Psycho almost shot for shot in 1998, and all it proved is that you can't trace your way into a classic. RoboCop and Total Recall both got slick new versions, and I'd still put the originals on first every time. A remake of a great movie can only tie. A remake of a flawed movie with a great idea can actually win. Which movie had a great idea and deserved a better version?

He was alone in a hotel room, bleeding after months of chronic pain, with his marriage mostly over, and he told his doctors he would not have the surgery. Joe Manganiello, on the lowest point of his illness. He was trying to finish a movie called The Kill Room in New Jersey. His doctors wanted him back in LA to cut him open and put him back on an ostomy bag. He said no and hung up. Right before he got the dog, he had given his gun away. He calls that phone call the moment he finally let go. Most people know him as the big, healthy guy from True Blood and Magic Mike, which makes this harder to hear. He tells it like a man who knows how close he came. ft: @richroll The Rich Roll Podcast on youtube
