That evening on Route 9W near West Point, David Denton's SUV crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames. The impact snapped primary distribution cables carrying over 12,000 volts of live electricity, draping them directly under and around the burning car. Why did other drivers stay back on the road? Because 12,000 volts of live current can arc through rubber soles or metal frames and stop a human heart instantly. Twenty-year-old Larry Pickett Jr., a safety on the Army Black Knights football team at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and his forty-six-year-old father, Larry Pickett Sr., did not hesitate. Stepping carefully over the live high-voltage wires as flames licked the hood, the young cadet wrenched open the driver's door and unbuckled the dazed sixty-five-year-old man. When his father slipped near a live wire, he got right back up, grabbed Denton's legs while his son lifted the man's chest, and carried him across Route 9W just seconds before the entire SUV was swallowed by a fireball.
