Mecklenburg County Manager Mike Bryant sent the following message to county employees:
I want to make you aware of a concerning situation involving employee payroll information and attempted paycheck diversion. I am sharing this information out of an abundance of caution so that everyone can remain vigilant while we work to understand and address the situation.
We have identified suspicious activity involving an individual contacting HR under the pretense of needing assistance regaining access to an account. The individual appears to be using untraceable phone numbers and appears to know our operations and even names of employees.
I am taking this matter seriously and an alert has been activated with appropriate teams actively investigating to determine its scope and take steps to prevent further attempts. While we continue those efforts, I believe it’s important to communicate with you promptly and transparently. I encourage everyone to take a few precautionary steps:
Verify your payroll information to ensure your banking and direct deposit details are accurate and have not been changed without your authorization.
Review your financial accounts for any unexpected changes or suspicious activity.
Protect your account credentials and remain cautious of unexpected requests for passwords, account information or personal information.
Report anything unusual immediately to HR and IT (for example, unexpectedly receiving a paper check instead of a direct deposit or not receiving a deposit when expected).
We are still working to establish the full picture. I do not want to create unnecessary concern, but I do believe you deserve to be informed so you can take reasonable steps to protect your personal information and financial security. More information will be coming in tomorrow's EmployeeNewsNow (ENN) about additional security upgrades and ways you can keep your information secure.

BREAKING: @wbtradio once again has learned of explosive news involving CMS leadership. I’ve learned that the FBI & Dept of Justice is investigating potential wrongdoings by members of the CMS School Board and administration.
Much of the investigation centers around the possible misuse of federal funds and other potential financial irregularities.
I’m aware of at least 3 people that have been interviewed by the FBI.
When contacted for statement, the office for the US Atty for Western NC said:
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI have had an active investigation related to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Because the investigation is ongoing, we cannot provide additional details at this time.”
This raises questions about CMS leadership to a whole new level. There are now two criminal investigations into CMS. The SBI is also looking into possible violations of state law. That’s in addition to the NC State Auditor’s office and the state bchool board also looking into CMS.

If you open today’s email from @CltLedger and compare their coverage of the CMS turmoil to the coverage in @theobserver, the Ledger is making a strong case that they’re now the paper of record for Charlotte, N.C.
CMS paid $379,000 for an investigation into then-Superintendent Crystal Hill.
A law firm conducted 86 interviews and reviewed 1.5M documents.
But there’s no written report of what investigators found. The school board never asked for one.
