🚨 NEW RESEARCH | ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE USE & CHRONIC PAIN
A new study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence Reports examined alcohol use among adolescents ages 14–19 receiving care for chronic pain.
🔎 Key findings among 243 adolescents:
• 32.1% reported lifetime alcohol use
• 30.5% reported past-year alcohol use
• Lifetime cannabis use was associated with 5.7 times the odds of more frequent past-year alcohol use
• Older age and perceiving alcohol as less risky were also associated with more frequent alcohol use
• Higher depressive symptoms were associated with lifetime alcohol use
📚 The findings highlight the importance of addressing risk perception, mental health, and polysubstance use when developing prevention and intervention strategies for adolescents with chronic pain.

Yeah but let’s reschedule it to expand the problem. Smart move
YIKES: President Donald Trump complained that in Democratic-run cities it "smells of marijuana and other things worse than marijuana."

New research explores the complex relationship between cannabinoids, the microbiome, and melanoma.
This 2026 review examines the cannabinoid system in normal and diseased skin and research into cannabinoids in metastatic melanoma and immunotherapy. Importantly, the authors emphasize that more research is needed, including investigation of non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD and CBG.

President Trump says Democrat-run cities "smell of marijuana" and that's where the crime is.
He's right about the smell. The product behind it is being moved to Schedule III by his own Justice Department, the same week DOJ loosened the 7-OH rule.
The president keeps describing a problem his agencies keep expanding.

Although people will not "overdose" on cannabis, it certainly indirectly kills in many other ways. Cannabis is a gateway drug
🕊️ IN LOVING MEMORY OF CATHERINE MAYBERRY
Forever 24 ❤️
Today, we remember Catherine Mayberry—a beloved daughter, friend, athlete, artist, musician, and young woman whose life held so much promise.
Catherine was an honor student, varsity tennis player, pianist, and award-winning artist. After going away to college, she began regularly using marijuana. Over time, her family watched her withdraw from school, activities, friends, and family. At age 20, Catherine experienced her first episode of psychosis.
Her parents described what followed as “Catherine’s first death.” For the next four years, she struggled with persistent hallucinations, delusional thinking, severe anxiety, and substance use.
On October 8, 2022, Catherine died at just 24 years old from an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and methamphetamine—what her parents called her “second and final death.”
Catherine was so much more than addiction, psychosis, or the circumstances of her death. She was deeply loved, and her life mattered. Her family shares her story hoping others will understand the serious risks associated with marijuana use, including addiction and psychosis.

In conclusion, for some at risk individuals, through a combination of genetic and environmental factors, it is highly likely that adolescent cannabis use can meaningfully increase risk of the initiation of opioid use and development of OUD.

Worth knowing
Cannabis-associated psychosis is a warning sign we cannot afford to dismiss.
New research highlights important differences in symptom patterns and recovery—and shows that relapse to cannabis use was linked to recurrent psychotic symptoms. Understanding these outcomes is essential for prevention, early intervention, treatment, and informed public health policy.
Please read, share, and help raise awareness of the science.

Placebo effect does not equal medicine
double-blind trial at Washington State University, 120 regular cannabis users vaped a placebo, 20 mg of THC, or 40 mg of THC. Neither they nor the researchers knew who got what.
Everyone felt less stressed afterward. The placebo group felt it too, about as much as the THC groups.

🧠 Major Study Links Adolescent Cannabis Use to Increased Risk of Serious Mental Health Disorders
A large 2026 study published in JAMA Health Forum followed 463,396 adolescents ages 13–17 through young adulthood. Researchers found that adolescents who reported cannabis use had a significantly higher risk of later developing psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety. ScienceDaily
Of particular concern, the risk of developing psychotic and bipolar disorders was approximately doubled among adolescents who reported cannabis use. Cannabis use was typically reported 1.7–2.3 years before the psychiatric diagnosis. The study adjusted for prior mental-health conditions and other substance use, though as an observational study it cannot by itself establish causation. ScienceDaily
IASIC believes parents, young people, healthcare professionals, and communities deserve accurate, evidence-based information about the potential mental-health risks associated with adolescent cannabis use.

Cannabis psychosis is uncommon but when it happens, it will devastate a family. My colleagues in Colorado have seen cannabis psychosis in children as young as 7.
"16-year-olds with no previous psychiatric history of any kind, no family history, and they're presenting to children's hospitals floridly psychotic."
Randy Bacchus was one of them. His parents were told cannabis wasn't supposed to be addictive.

🧠 IASIC Speaker Series Presents: “High Stakes: Cannabis and Tobacco Co-Use and Psychosis Risk”
Join Heather Burrell Ward, MD, Director of Neuromodulation Research and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, for the October IASIC Speaker Series.
Dr. Ward will examine the growing evidence on the co-use of cannabis and tobacco, its association with psychosis risk, and its impact on cognitive performance. This evidence-based discussion will provide valuable insights for clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and prevention professionals seeking to better understand the mental health implications of concurrent cannabis and tobacco use.
A nationally recognized investigator, Dr. Ward earned her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed psychiatry residency training at Brigham & Women’s Hospital–Harvard Medical School, followed by fellowship training in behavioral neurology and noninvasive brain stimulation at Harvard Medical School. She was also named a 2021 STAT News Wunderkind for her contributions to neuroscience and addiction research.
