No scholarship. No housing. No facilities that could compete with the schools calling him. On paper, every other program in the conference had more. When Chandler walked into our program, he wasn’t choosing amenities. He was choosing a promise: that if he gave everything, I would give everything back. What I could offer him didn’t fit on a brochure. It was clarity. Accountability. A standard. And the truth, even when the truth was uncomfortable. The gap between where he was and where he wanted to be wouldn’t be closed by talent alone. It would be closed by the work nobody claps for. So he did the work nobody claps for. He left with the most rebounds in college history, the most rebounds in a season, the most blocks in college history, the most charges taken in college history, and a college diploma. He took the hard coaching & came back for more. He turned film sessions into self-examination, and self-examination into change. When the schedule was brutal, he didn’t negotiate with it. When the results didn’t show up yet, he didn’t let his effort wait on them. He didn’t have the facilities, so he became the facility. He didn’t have the housing, so he made the work his home. That’s why Chandler is a pro. Not because someone handed him a path, but because he paved one with repetitions, and he still does. The pro game didn’t change his habits. It just raised the price of skipping them. He pays it daily. People ask me how a program with less produced players who went on to have more. As if it’s a surprise. It isn’t. When you can’t sell young men on what you have, you have to win them with who you are. And when they choose you for who you are, they become who they were meant to be. That’s the heart of Driven by Purpose. Purpose outlasts resources. Purpose outworks circumstances. And purpose, once a young man discovers it, doesn’t need a scholarship to justify it or a facility to house it. It lives in him. A 90% graduation rate. None of it was an accident. All of it was intentional. Because coaching is what I do. Positively mentoring is who I am. And Chandler is the proof that the two, done right, can change a life. I’m proud of you @Chndlrjhnson

No scholarship. No housing. No facilities that could compete with the schools calling him. On paper, every other program in the conference had more. But Markhi didn’t sign with a package. He signed with a promise. He bet on me before the résumé said he should. Two people deciding that purpose would outwork resources. Then he got to work. Early mornings before class. Extra reps after practice. Then he graduated. He paid his own way to chase a dream most people told him was out of reach from a non-scholarship D1 junior college. No shortcuts. No safety net. Just a relentless will to prove that where you start doesn’t decide where you finish. Yesterday, he was drafted into the NBA G League. From a D1 Juco gym with no scholarship to give… to the NBA stage. Let that sink in. This is why I wrote Driven by Purpose. Not from theory. From the gym where we had less. From the late-night conversations about who he was becoming, not just how many points he scored. From watching a young man choose belief over comfort, & then honoring that belief with work every single day. I didn’t build his path. I just refused to let him walk it alone. He did the walking. Every step. Markhi, thank you, your mom & dad for trusting me when trust was all I had to give. You made the bet. You outworked the odds. And you reminded me why I do this. Coaching is what I do. Positively mentoring is who I am. Proud doesn’t cover it.

I am a leader in Christ, I am strong in Christ, I am a light in Christ. Being blessed with the opportunity to use the game of basketball; the sport that I love, to positively pour into, mentor & steward student-athletes means the world to me. My authorship is another avenue to pour into, build life, long, love relationships & guide the men God has blessed me to mentor & coach, not just in between the lines, but in life... God is so good. Coaching is what I do, Positively mentor is who I am.

Every coach carries two versions of himself: the one the world can see, & the one he’s already becoming. Most people wait for the second to show up before they speak about him. I write him into existence first. That’s what authorship is to me. Not a record of who I’ve been, but a rehearsal of who I’m preparing to be. Psychologists call it identity-based change: behavior follows belief, & belief follows the story you keep telling yourself. When I write, I’m not describing a future. I’m training my mind to recognize it, so that when it arrives, it feels familiar instead of foreign. Seventeen years of coaching taught me how this works in young men. You don’t wait for a player to become a leader before you call him one. You speak the standard into him until his habits catch up to his name. Writing is me coaching myself the same way. The page is where I practice the version of me the next stage requires, before any stage requires it. Driven by Purpose is God equipping me with the tools to do exactly that. Every framework in it, from the Purpose Audit to the NIL Mentor Map to the Retention Standard, isn’t theory I’m hoping to apply someday. It’s a blueprint I’ve already lived, now made visible. The book doesn’t announce what I want to become. It proves what I’ve been built for. Because success; to me, isn’t being handed a platform. It’s building the one I’m prepared to stand on. Preparation is the foundation. Purpose is the frame. Authorship is the construction. And when the lights come on, I won’t be stepping onto someone else’s stage, learning who I need to be. I’ll be standing on my own, already fully formed. Coaching is what I do. Positively mentoring is who I am. Writing is how I become him before the world calls him by name. @Walmart @BNTrends @amazon @booksamillion #college #basketball #coach #books #author

“Write the vision, & make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” God did not say think the vision. He did not say feel it, hope it, or post it. He said write it. There is a reason the instruction comes with ink.

Being a coach is not a job. It’s a privilege. And a calling. A parent hands us their child & says, “Take care of my world.” A young person hands us their dreams & says, “Help me get there.” A university hands us its name & says, “Represent us well.” That kind of trust isn’t earned once. It’s honored every single day. But this is a new era. NIL, the transfer portal, & constant noise have changed the game. Today’s student-athlete can be valued by everyone & known by no one. That’s why I wrote Driven by Purpose: because the privilege of coaching now carries a greater responsibility. It’s the privilege of helping a young person answer “Who am I beyond this game?” before the world answers it for them. It’s the privilege of teaching them that a deal is a door, not a destination, & that character is the only brand that appreciates over time. It’s the privilege of building a culture so rooted in relationship that players stay not because they’re trapped, but because they’re transformed. It’s the privilege of stewardship over spotlight: knowing these young men & women are only ours to grow & return to the world better than we found them. We don’t coach because we have a whistle. We coach because we’ve been entrusted with people. So today, to every coach: never forget what you’ve been given. Lead with purpose. Mentor with intention. Empower beyond the game. The wins are temporary. The privilege of shaping a life is eternal. Coaching is what I do. Positively mentoring is who I am. #coach #college #basketball #mentor #books

Today isn't just another birthday, it's a celebration of everything you carry so gracefully: the healer, the nurturer, the woman who spends her days restoring other women's health & somehow still has strength left to pour into everyone she loves. You are proof that softness & power aren't opposites. You lead with compassion in a field that demands precision, and you bring that same balance home, calm in the chaos, steady when life isn't, present even when you've given all day to everyone else first. Watching you move through this season of your life has been one of the greatest privileges I have. You've grown into a woman who doesn't just chase wellness for others, you live it, breathe it, & teach it. Your strength isn't loud, but it is unmistakable. Your love isn't performative, but it is unshakable. Today, I don't just celebrate 22 birthdays together, I celebrate who you've become: wiser, stronger, more fully yourself with every year. The woman standing in front of me now is more beautiful, more magnetic, more you than ever before, & I get a front-row seat to it all. Happy birthday to the woman who heals the world & somehow still saves the best of herself for us. I love who you are today more than I did yesterday, & I already know tomorrow will be the same.

Fourteen years ago, I made the best decision of my life, not just choosing you, but choosing us, choosing to build something that would outlast every late night, overcoming & every season of waiting & becoming. You are the steadiest piece of life I know, you carry a quiet strength, the kind that heals people for a living & still has healing left over for me. You've watched me chase & capture my dream, you helped me carry it. That's not something every marriage has. That's rare. That's you. Fourteen years isn't just a number, it's fourteen years of choosing each other on the ordinary days, not just the easy ones. It's the version of love that doesn't need an audience: the matcha made without being asked, the prayers said over me when I didn't have the words myself, the way you believe in me even when the scoreboard hasn't caught up to the vision yet. I don't just love you. Fourteen years in, I'd make that bet again in a heartbeat. Here's to the woman who is my peace, my partner, my proof that patience & love are never wasted. Happy anniversary, my love. Here's to fourteen more, & then eternity after that.

I’m grateful for the version of me who kept climbing without proof. Grateful for the humility that comes from not knowing exactly where the trail bends next, and trusting the One who mapped it before I took my first step. Mental strength was never about forcing the summit into view, it was about trusting my footing when the fog wouldn’t lift.

Dreams don’t ask for your convenience. They ask for your obedience. And obedience costs something. It cost me comfortable feelings. It cost me the easy “not yet.” It cost me sitting in seasons that didn’t make sense while I kept building anyway, because purpose doesn’t wait for permission, & neither did I. This book sits where it belongs, on the hardwood, in a university arena, in the hands of colleagues who believe in the power of positive mentorship, because that’s where the work actually happens. Not in the finished product. In the reps nobody saw. In the unknown I ran toward instead of away from. Your feelings are not the price of your dreams, they’re the toll. Pay it. Keep driving.

There is a version of me that would have panicked by now. That version measured his worth by his title, & when the title went quiet, so did he. But somewhere in this season I learned that faith isn’t the feeling you get when the answer arrives. Faith is what you do with your hands & your calendar while the answer is still forming. So I got specific. I stopped praying for the door & started preparing for the room behind it. I wrote. I studied. I let the silence interview me, and I answered honestly. That honesty is where Driven by Purpose came from. The book didn’t come out of a victory lap. It came out of a season where nothing on the outside was confirming anything on the inside, & I had to decide whether purpose was something I performed or something I possessed. The Purpose Audit exists because I ran it on myself first. I had to separate what I wanted from what I was actually built to carry. Those aren’t always the same thing, & waiting is what exposes the difference. Here’s what I’ve come to believe. Ambition asks when. Purpose asks who. Ambition is loud in a waiting season because it has no work to do. Purpose stays busy, because purpose doesn’t require an audience to be legitimate. Stewardship over spotlight. What I tend in private is what I’ll be trusted with in public. Waiting has a way of stripping the borrowed language out of you. Every phrase you picked up because it sounded good, every conviction you were renting from somebody else, the wait repossesses all of it. What’s left is yours. That’s not punishment. That’s inventory. I don’t romanticize this. Some days the delay feels like denial, & I have to preach to myself before I can pour into anybody else. But I’ve stopped asking God to shorten the season. I’m asking Him to make sure I don’t leave it empty-handed. Because I’m not waiting on permission. I’m not waiting on validation. I’m not waiting to be chosen. I’m being formed. And a man being formed by purpose is never actually standing still. – at Austin, TX

There’s a strange kind of intentionality in seeing your own name on a shelf next to writers you once studied, in knowing a book you built from seventeen years of lived proof now sits on platforms & in stores, in the hands of readers who never watched you coach a single possession. It was decided long before it was visible: that what lives between your ears deserves the same discipline as what happens on the floor. Intention is the quiet insistence that the mind is not the undercard to the mission, it is half the whole of it. Integrity is what happens when that book leaves your hands & starts being discussed by scholars whose life’s work is scrutiny, when the frameworks have to hold up in rooms far more academically demanding than any locker room. It’s one thing to write something that sounds true. It’s another to have it examined by minds trained to find where conviction & substance don’t match, & have it stand anyway. The energy poured into a young man’s development and the energy poured into a paragraph are not competing disciplines, they are the same discipline, aimed at two different rooms. Mentorship is the book lived in real time. The book is the mentorship, distilled & given permanence. This is the revolving door these days actually are: learning feeding writing, writing feeding understanding, understanding feeding back into every conversation with a student-athlete. Intention keeps that door turning. Integrity is what makes sure nothing that walks through it, the shelf, the scholar’s table, the practice gym, ever gets a lesser version of the same conviction. – at Austin, TX

Before Driven by Purpose could speak to anyone else, the man behind it had to keep speaking honestly to himself. That is where intentionality actually lives: the study, the self-audit, the refusal to let seventeen years of experience calcify into comfort instead of continuing to grow. Intention is choosing, again & again, to still be a student of your craft. Integrity is what happens when that private development gets asked to hold weight in public. It is one thing to feel ready. It is another to have built the readiness on purpose, deliberately, year by year, so that when the pages finally gets written, it isn’t performance, it’s overflow. Driven by Purpose was never going to be the source. It was always going to be the evidence: proof that the growth was real before the writing made it visible. This is the twin discipline few people see: Refining the frameworks in silence. Auditing the purpose before ever auditing the audience. What looks to the world like a book is, underneath, the residue of years spent developing a man who could write something that needed to exist, & mean every line of it. Intentional development is the twin that comes first & asks for no credit. Integrity is the twin that shows up later & proves the first one wasn’t wasted. Together, they are the only reason Driven by Purpose could be written as something the moment actually needed, not manufactured for it, but grown into it. #coach #college #basketball #purpose #journey – at Austin, TX
