Jesse Legree went to St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, one of the best high school football programs in America. His team won a national championship. He got one scholarship offer. Not one from a Power Four school. One. Total. Oregon State, a program clear across the country in Corvallis, a town he knew nothing about. The knocks on him were easy to find. He was listed at 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds. And he'd spent most of his high school career as a defensive back, only switching to receiver as a senior. Not enough tape, not enough size, not enough time. So he took the leap anyway. Blind. "All I really wanted throughout my recruitment process was an opportunity to play, and that's what they gave me," Legree said when he committed. "Realistically, I didn't know anything about Oregon State." He enrolled early, in January, and got to work. Two games into his college career, Jesse Legree leads the entire country in receiving yards. In his debut against No. 23 Houston, he caught five passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. The next week against No. 13 Texas Tech on national television, he went for eight catches, 240 yards, and two more scores, including a 75-yard touchdown. That's 13 catches, 376 yards, and three touchdowns in two games. More receiving yards than anyone in college football, ahead of Heisman contenders like Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Miami's Malachi Toney. He's the first Pac-12 freshman to win Freshman of the Week in back-to-back weeks in years. His head coach, JaMarcus Shephard, was almost annoyed that anyone was surprised. "Us coaches, we want to under-sell and over-deliver. I don't understand why you guys wouldn't believe me when I'm saying kids are going to be good." Every program in America looked at the same film and passed. One school picked up the phone. Two games in, they look like geniuses.

The University of North Alabama was founded in 1830. That's 196 years. Older than the Civil War. Older than the state of Texas being a state. On Saturday night, the Lions will host a home football game on their own campus for the first time in the history of the school. Since 1949, every home game they've ever played has been at Braly Municipal Stadium, a city-owned field a few miles off campus. Students got in a car or on a bus. Nobody walked out of a dorm and into a game. Their head coach Brent Dearmon put it about as plainly as it can be put. "For years, this program was a road warrior. Even at home." That ends at 6 p.m. Saturday. Bobby Wallace Field at Bank Independent Stadium sits in the heart of campus in Florence, Alabama. Over 10,000 seats. Chairbacks. A 360-degree concourse. A players' tunnel. A video board comparable to what South Alabama has. Students and the band get their own sections. The field is named for Bobby Wallace, who coached the Lions to three consecutive national championships in the mid 1990s. Alcorn State comes in from Lorman, Mississippi, 338 miles away. The two schools have never played each other in football. North Alabama only moved up to Division I in 2018. This season is the first time they've ever had six home games as a D1 program, and it's the first year every one of them is on campus. The athletic director, Josh Looney, has been selling it the same way since construction started. "A state-of-the-art, on-campus stadium will elevate our gameday experience, and we look forward to creating unforgettable memories for the Shoals community." Dearmon said something simpler about what it means to his players. Being able to play in the heart of campus for the first time in school history allows them not just to win, but to defend their home. A hundred and ninety six years is a long time to wait for a home game.
