Whoever's decision this was to run out the clock in your own endzone, as opposed to taking a safety, should be fired immediately.
Seriously.
Ventura County has long been a distance-running hotbed. Check out The Star’s rankings of the top returning girls cross country runners.

Coaches, have you planned how many practice reps your specialists will take before this week's game? Does it matter?

I’ve had similar conversations. While I’m nowhere near a sprint coach (trying to learn, though), I NEVER condition, and haven’t for almost 20 years. Complete waste of time.

From a Sprint Based Football coach in Wisconsin ⤵️
A reporter approached me after our game this past week...which was a pretty physical grinder against a top 10 team... he said "I don't know what you are doing with these boys for conditioning, but you have the best conditioned high school team I've ever seen." It was an amazing affirmation to hear... especially knowing that we threw traditional conditioning out the window!
An all-Oxnard battle went to double overtime, teams stretched unbeaten starts, a record-scoring effort for one program, and more from the second night of Week 3 of the high school football season.

The US 5000m dream team had a spread last night that would put any cross country team to shame: the five runners were separated by just .35 of a second.

It's called an endurance sport because you have to learn the skill of enduring discomfort.
Both Del Sol and Nordhoff hope to play football games in their new and improved stadiums later this fall. With more high school football notes.

Spent the last hour answering a coach from Texas:
Hey Coach,
I know you talk about cramping being a neurological issue when it comes to game time in football.
I know you need to match the intensity of the games in practice. What about the volume? Are you trying to match the volume as well at those intensities?
(such a great question)
Answer ⤵️
Never match volumes in practice. LET THE GAME BE HARD. (Marathon runners don’t train by running marathons in practice!)
Feed the Cats teams thrive in the 4th quarter because they enter the game mentally alert, fully-charged physically, and FAST. (And speed is the barometer of HEALTH.)
Total volume of the practice week should add up to the game with no practice exceeding 1/3 of a game volume.
No different than training for a fast 400 meters. It may sound intuitive to run repeat 300s, 400s, and 500s but it doesn’t work.
1) too slow (speed wins)
2) too miserable (destroys the the E’s: energy, enthusiasm, excitement)
3) physically ruins the next day and eventually detrains athleticism
4) injuries guaranteed
Instead, let the 400 be hard. Sprinting 1000 miles a week would not make the 400 “easy”.
Train at performance-level in small doses. Train on a foundation of freshness.
Think about it this way, if you matched game volumes AND intensities in two 🏈 practices (Tuesday & Wednesday) during the week… that would be the same as playing 3 games in 4 days. (That’s old school 🥴)
Never burn the steak.

Rather than focusing on your race time, focus on passing the person in front of you and helping your team score.
Be a teammate who lowers your team’s score.
And when you keep passing people, the chance that you’ll like your finish time goes up.
Let’s go!
