High school basketball success comes down to three things:
- Playing harder than anyone expects you to.
- Playing smarter than your opponents prepare for.
- Playing together when the game is on the line.

Dan Hurley shares why coaching players effectively requires knowing which version of you they need in each moment.
“In practices, I’ve got to push for game-like reps so that on game night they can execute. On game night, I go to boxing trainer in the corner with the fighter, pumping them up and building up their confidence.”
Great coaches are adaptable and attuned to the needs of the moment and the people they serve. They know when to push, when to teach, when to reassure and when to get out of the way.
But keep in mind, the standard can remain consistent even when the delivery changes.

Ben McCollum said, "Your job is to not be here for yourself - but it’s to be here for everybody else."
Great teams are built of selflessness.
• You show up for each other.
• You sacrifice for each other.
• You win with each other.

Doc Rivers reveals he once got into a heated argument with Pat Riley that taught him one of the biggest lessons of his career: never coach people for who they are today, but push them toward who they can become
“Coach Pat Riley, when I was playing for the Knicks, Coach Riley and I had the biggest argument in my entire playing career. I know all you players thought, you know, I used to go at coaches too.”
“And during the shouting match, Coach looked at me and said, ‘One day, when you’re a head coach, and you will be one, you’re going to understand exactly where I’m coming from.’”
“And I literally yelled back at him, ‘Are you crazy? I am never going to coach. Every coach that I know, they’re nuts.’ Well, I want to tell Coach Riley thank you for being right on all accounts.”
“And one of the lessons he told me was to never coach a person for who they are today, but to push them to who they should be someday. That was very important for me.”

Buzz Williams shares how entitlement and gratitude are connected and why you can only have one.
"When entitlement is high, gratitude is low."
"Why would gratitude be low? Because you're being selfish. 'Hey, I'm supposed to get this.'"
"If ego and arrogance are a part of entitlement - which they are - then I can't function with the level of gratitude that it takes."
Then he connected the dots:
"If my entitlement is high, my gratitude is low. If my gratitude is low, then I'm not present...You see how they're connected?"
Entitlement pulls you out of the moment.
Gratitude keeps you in it.
Then he had them flip it:
"When gratitude is high, entitlement is low."
You can't be grateful and entitled at the same time.
Entitlement is the enemy of progress. It's the delusion of earning without earning.
Be grateful for the moment and the opportunity.
