Your latest grand colonial Adventure has arrived! This video tells the violent, tragic, deadly voyage of the American sealing ship General Gates. American captain Riggs smuggled Convicts out of Sydney and took them to New Zealand. There, the convicts soon wished they had stayed in Australia as they met abuse at the hands of the Yankee captain and death (and cannibalism) at the hands of the Maori. Cockney thieves, escaped convicts, Melvillesque Yankees, adventurous seaman and Maori warriors; what more do you want?! Watch it now! youtu.be/Bsw5PQkJYWs

Guy Fawkes, champion of England against the Scottish menace. Just kidding, I'm glad they got him, but his anti-Scottish sentiment is not a widely told part of the story.

Much is made of British military decline. While the numbers are indeed depressing, we've actually gone through this before, from being a major military state in medieval Europe to a military near-nonentity by the end of the 17th century. Yet, quickly, this was turned around.

Far from appealing to radical, distinct and YOONIQUE Australianisms, Labor WWI anti-conscriptionists (outside of fringe socialist internationalist rabble rousers) exclusively framed their core arguments in appeals to Britishness rather than Australianness...

For everyone British, or of the British diaspora, complaining about Halloween and how it represents American cultural infiltration of our societies, I have a suggestion for you: make an effort for Bonfire Night next week.

To be a sailor in the 17th century was to be a fighting man. Edward Coxere of Dover fought the Spanish, the Turks, the French and Flemings all while just trying to do business in the Mediterranean. By becoming a Quaker, and thus eschewing combat, he was risking his career.

Late 16th-century iron canon were inferior to bronze, but the England of Elizabeth I was able to outgun its enemies by having more, much cheaper iron canon rather than depending on bronze. The iron industry was developed in England by the deliberate patronage of the Tudor state.

On this day in 1834 the Battle of Pinjarra was fought between British forces and the Bindjareb Noongar people in Western Australia. This event is now more often described as a massacre. I think historian John Connor makes a fair case that battle is the correct word:

Before Gloise and HMS Warrior, there was Napoleon (1850), the first steam-powered ship of the line. A massively neglected transitory battleship between the era of experimental steam sloops of war of the 1840s and the iron-hulled warships and ironclads of the 1860s.
Replying to @Chossingstone1
The French launched Gloise (1859) and the Brits launched HMS Warrior (1860). The two ships were agile, faster, iron-armored, and, although they were only rated as large frigates, they were most powerful than any 1st due to their armor and 14 knot speed
