The astonishing part of Burtons’s painting is that this intensity is watercolor and gouache, not oil. Burton built the blue and red through precise layering. It is so light-sensitive that as @phantomdialogue mentions, @NGIreland only brings it out for two hours a week.

These shots have such a 1970s palette. Dusty pinks, tobacco browns, olive greens, muted blues. And the earthy, slightly faded combinations feel so particular to the decade.
