A bull elk sharpens his antlers for battle.
I took this shot back in September during the rut. It reminded me of the incident that happened during this encounter. An older photographer went off trail and followed this bull into the woods for better shots. What he didn't realize is that there were other people nearby, on the trail, wanting to observe the elk in a natural state and not follow him everywhere he went. But the man was unaware of anyone else around him and continued to push the elk further and further into the woods.
Near me, there was a mother and her young son with his camera. He had a 300mm zoom lens, which isn't a great zoom range unless you're really close to your subject. The poor kid was disappointed because the man kept approaching the elk, causing the elk to move further away, and the boy couldn't get his picture. The mom finally snapped. It was a heated moment. I just stood there watching all of this unfold. The man wasn't confrontational or upset about being scolded, but he sure did walk back to the trail like a kid who just got yelled at by his own mother in public. He seemed genuinely unaware of his actions, almost ignorant in an innocent way.
But it made me think about the ethics of wildlife photography. We need to normalize not interrupting wildlife in their natural habitat. Observing them from a safe distance is the best approach to great wildlife photography. They know you're there. If they move on, let them. I am not against holding your ground and letting them come to you (depending on the season, place, and species). I definitely don't recommend that for everyone. Sometimes, it pays off. But if you're inexperienced and not familiar with wildlife behavior, depending on the species, you should maintain a safe distance and back up when they approach. Give them enough space to move around you.
There will always be people who will scream at you if you go off trail. There will always be people who judge you for getting "too close" in their opinion. But there are people out there who interact with wildlife every single day. It's not our business to tell them what to do just because we're not comfortable with something they're comfortable with doing. But also, if you're in a national park, you should probably respect the rules and stay on trail.
In my opinion, it's not about preserving the grass... I think that's a weak argument (I have another story about that, later). It's about genuine safety. You could get lost, easily. You could also injure yourself when no one else is around to help you. You're at the mercy of unpredictable and harsh weather conditions... as well as wildlife encounters. It's best to observe wildlife from the trail, if that's your goal. What I should have said to that man, specifically, is this: "You should never approach a bull elk during rut season because their testosterone is elevated and they will absolutely charge you if they feel threatened." Because he was slow, feeble, and unconcerned for his own safety, I am glad he listened to that woman and came back to the trail. It was a good learning moment for everyone. What I ended up saying was, "Did you get any good shots?" He didn't need another person scolding him. I tried to lighten the moment. Either way, be cautious in the wild and respect nature.
With that said, I just want you all to know, I took this shot from the safety of the trail with my Sigma 150-600mm zoom, and then I quickly left. I really don't like observing wildlife with crowds of people because it's always so dramatic. Hence the story. 😁

Just got done recording with @prolibertypod, Alex Bernardo - what a brilliant and humble man - someone who represents us Christians in a great light.
We had a robust discussion about Politics, Economics, and Christian Faith - most topics stemming from his newly released book - Politics, Economics, and New Testament Interpretation.
If you are a Bible/Politics/Economics Nerd - this is a no brainer buy. And even if you are not, I think this will challenge many assumptions in a healthy way.
One of my favorite aspects of his book is how he reframes the political conversation — moving beyond the traditional capitalism vs. socialism debate toward a deeper discussion about authoritarianism vs. liberty, while examining how our interpretations of Scripture shape our understanding of political authority, economic systems, and the freedom we have in Christ.
It challenges us to consider not only what we believe about politics and economics, but also whether those beliefs are genuinely rooted in Scripture or shaped by the political and cultural assumptions we've inherited.
Exactly the kind of conversation I love having on The Personal Freedom Podcast.
Stay tuned for this one! And in the meantime, pick up a copy of Alex's book so you can dive into these ideas before the episode drops!

Fresh snow on Longs Peak on Thursday (10-15-26). Then, see the before photo from Tuesday, with clouds pouring off the summit. Rocky Mountain National Park, October 2026.
I've been mostly quiet here for six months. Time to change that... The mountains in my digital collages are my own photographs, so this is where I'm starting again. There's also a story behind all of it that I've never told. Part one goes up Tuesday, from Wild Basin, just south of this peak.

Seven years ago, I left my girlfriend and my closest friend on a trail in Rocky Mountain National Park and walked out alone. They went looking for me.
Last Wednesday I went back. Alone.
I've never told the story. I'm telling it now, in chapters.
Chapter 0: Wild Basin.
Part One
If we do nothing, nothing will happen or be achieved. If we do a lot, a lot will happen and be achieved. We get out of life what we put into life. Don't stress, let God show you the way.

Plans to become a published author and grow my coaching business.
9-5 corporate job — with a new countrywide process I am rolling out this week while I’m attending an unrelated in-person conference.
Recently began exclusively dating a beautiful woman who makes me laugh and smile grander than anyone I’ve ever met.
Beginning a radical physical training regimen to prepare for an event I’ve never done before next year.
Getting ready for elk hunting next month with my Dad with the hopes of filling the freezer.
Some days I wonder why I am putting so much on my plate.
Some days I can’t get to everything I want to do.
Some days I think I’ve gone mad and ask myself why I am doing all of this at the same time.
But at the end of each day, I know I can handle it and that I am better for it.
Each day I prove that I’m worth betting on and that I have valuable gifts that I can provide to others.
Instead of letting the anxiety of expectations sink my morale, I choose to thank The Lord that I’ve been granted the opportunity to pursue these experiences and to even fail at them.
I have faith that if it is in God’s Will, let it be done!

It's helped me get through some tough days and helps keep me on the path.
My $.02 take on the @ShawnRyan762 and @leahfiles whatever you want to call it. As an avid viewer of @ShawnRyanShow I see his show as he puts it out there for us to decide what we will. Shawn is a podcaster/interviewer. Leah is a guest being interviewed. His job is to give the guest a venue to speak their thoughts, and that he does well. For the most part he gives them the stage, while sitting back listening. I see this whole, he said she said as fruitless social media verbiage for the masses to feel like what they express here is even relevant to anything socially important. ACTIONS speak louder than words and X is words, and words alone. The masses on X bloviate but at least both parties in this issue are doing something/ACTION regardless of what the mass sheeple blab. I don't have to agree with either, but I do appreciate their efforts to expand free thinking. We didn't get into this serfdom state nationally from the efforts of the Shawn's and Leah's, we got hear from the apathy of the masses talking the talk but not walking the walk.
