With one in five American teenagers reporting harm to their mental health from social media sites, it is critical that we take action to rein in big tech companies. I’m hosting a virtual town hall TOMORROW, October 29th at 3:30 p.m. to discuss the urgent need to protect all social media users, especially young people. I will be joined in this timely conversation by expert special guests from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and @CommonSense. RSVP to join us: desaulnier.house.gov/town-ha…

A judge on Wednesday ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion after a jury found the company liable for deceiving users about privacy and content moderation policies on Facebook. Judge Francis Mathew handed down the amount. The state had sought $35 billion to $40 billion. abc7news.com/19965355/

Last week two different chatbot companies were in the news. First, Character. ai filed for bankruptcy, in an effort to avoid accountability.  New reporting suggests Disney asked the company to file for bankruptcy as part of their deal to acquire the technology. They didn’t want to buy the company outright because of the legal liability. Kids were harmed. That debt does not disappear in bankruptcy court. Then eight state AGs filed coordinated lawsuits against OpenAI this week. First coordinated state action against an AI company. The allegations: deceiving parents about safety, designing products that create emotional dependency in children, and failing to protect young users from self-harm content. Nebraska’s suit is the one to watch. It’s the first enforcement action brought under a state design code law. That’s a milestone worth marking. While CharacterAI seeks to use the bankruptcy process as a get out of jail free card, OpenAI’s defense? Parental controls. We’ve heard that before. You cannot parental-control your way out of dangerous design. The burden of proof belongs on these companies. These stories show the AI chatbot industry is running the same playbook social media ran. Race to scale. Worry about safety later. We know how that story ends. theguardian.com/technology/2…

News reports of deaths related to #AI chatbots should be setting off alarm bells. But the use of AI, including general purpose chatbots like ChatGPT, for companionship is unacceptably risky for teens. Read more in my op-ed for @techpolicypress : techpolicy.press/ai-companie…

@CommonSense is honored to have joined the DeSerio Family and over 150 organizations opposing the AI moratorium. The kids harmed by unregulated tech deserve the time and attention this issue requires.  @JohnBoozman @SenTomCotton @MarshaBlackburn @HawleyMO commonsensemedia.org/sites/d…
I lost my son to TikTok’s algorithm after he was inundated with pro suicide content. Enough is enough, we need protections and limiting states rights is a horrible decision. Remove the AI moratorium from the “Big Beautiful Bill”!

The Republicans' proposed budget, now heading to the Senate, would ban states from regulating AI for a full DECADE. But a new poll from @CommonSense finds that concern about the effects of AI on kids and teens is widespread and bipartisan. We can beat this and protect kids.
🚨 BREAKING: The new Beautiful Budget Bill is hiding a provision that would BAN states from protecting kids from AI harms. For 10 YEARS. Buried in a budget bill. Passed before Memorial Day. They thought you wouldn't notice. ⬇️
