Two of the original DOOM creators are arguing about the game’s history.
The disagreement is over Deathmatch and whether the team knew from the beginning that multiplayer would become a huge part of DOOM.
Sandy Petersen says the team thought very few people would actually play it:
“We all agreed at id that it was unlikely anyone would ever play Deathmatch.”
John Romero disagrees:
“We knew deathmatch would be huge.”
Romero also points to a 1993 press release that promoted DOOM’s multiplayer months before Petersen joined id software
