Baseball provides a longer season by game count than any other American sport. Yet it still isn’t long enough for me. As soon as the World Series ends, I miss it already, writes Joseph Epstein

Can American history museums discuss racism in a way that is both honest and patriotic at the same time?
The African American Civil War Museum proves that it's possible. A beautiful essay by @xchrisgonz

Fantastic episode today @commentary with special guest @dansenor on Israel's election; the Michigan Senate race; and the U.S. midterms. Plus, I recommend ways to remember Patrick Stewart.

LISTEN: We are joined by @dansenor and @continetti to discuss the final vote totals in Israel’s elections and the prospects of forming a new government, and how will potential new coalitions deal with Israel’s geopolitical challenges?
Plus, the issue of rising antisemitism in the leadup to the midterms, the problem with polling rural conservatives, Haley Stevens’ message to Abdul El-Sayed, and Matt honors the late Patrick Stewart by recommending the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Inner Light and his general body of work.

Congratulations to @charlesmurray on receiving this year’s Jeane Kirkpatrick Prize from Encounter Books, and for an engaging, insightful acceptance speech. His new book, Taking Religion Seriously, is fascinating—and here is @RAVerBruggen in City Journal with a recent overview of Murray’s remarkable contribution to social thought:

I wrote about the African American Civil War Museum, which recently reopened in D.C. It's a wonderful museum and I highly recommend it. The way it deals with the history of race is exemplary.

🎯 @continetti “In 2018 the late rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks spoke eloquently of how antisemitism corrupts society. First, antisemitism moves from the fringes to the center of a political party. Then, when a party sees it won’t be held accountable for antisemitic views, the virus gains strength. Finally, the opponents of antisemitism are vilified and punished for speaking out. “All three factors exist in Britain now,” Rabbi Sacks concluded.
America has crossed Sacks’s first threshold. Is it about to cross the second, where antisemites pay no price for slander?
The 2026 election will decide.”

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.
