New @PostOpinions column: Angry about inflation? Democrats want to pour gas on the fire. The party's slate of big-spending, anti-fossil-fuel candidates would make affordability worse, not better. FREE GIFT LINK: wapo.st/4jNy5Tw

‼️ The New York Times abt Vance/Rezaei letter: • Vice President JD Vance sent his letter to Mohsen Rezaei last week through Qatari mediators. • In the letter, Vance proposed a meeting between U.S. and Iranian officials in the near future, indicating that he would personally lead negotiations on behalf of the United States. • The proposal was well received by Iran’s leadership, with many Iranian officials viewing Vance as an influential figure capable of helping end hostilities. Rezaei is expected to formally respond by Thursday. • Vance’s letter emphasized the need to resolve the nuclear issue and insisted that Iran’s nuclear program be on the negotiating table from the outset. • Vance also stressed the importance of resolving the conflict between Washington and Tehran through direct negotiations. • According to the officials, direct talks could begin as early as next week in Qatar or Turkey. • If Tehran accepts Vance’s proposal, negotiations would technically begin without preconditions, according to U.S. and Iranian officials. • Vance chose to address his letter to Rezaei after U.S. officials concluded that they needed to engage directly with someone within Iran’s leadership who holds influence over both the hard-line faction opposed to a deal and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

One of the things that struck me while writing Peace Through Strength was just how much opposition President Reagan faced to his military buildup, including from within his own administration. He understood what was at stake and stayed the course. In @NRO, I examine what that history means for Trump today. nationalreview.com/magazine/…

New data out from @ReasonFdn on state and local government finances. About half of state and local long-term debt is unfunded liabilities for retirement benefits for government workers.

I like to imagine the 1975 Oval Office meeting when Gerald Ford, pipe clenched between his teeth, WH Chief of Staff Don Rumsfeld and his deputy Dick Cheney greenlit this ad. Cheney: “It’s the bicentennial next year. We need to get the hippies on board.” Ford: “Darn right. The bums in Haight-Ashbury are American too.” Rumsfeld: “We have just the thing, Mr. President.”
In 1976, the U.S. government funded one of the most psychedelic short films ever made. It was filled with odd images and occult symbols. 🎬 from 200 (1976) by Vince Collins.

For the Churchill-quoting Prime Minister of Israel, we’d say “nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result.” Benjamin Netanyahu comes out weakened but still ahead. wsj.com/opinion/benjamin-net… via @WSJopinion

“As long as the elections keep coming, Netanyahu remains a caretaker prime minister. Under Israel’s constitutional order, caretakers are fully empowered to launch military operations. Menachem Begin did it in 1981 against Iraq’s Osirak reactor—at the height of an election campaign.” @havivrettiggur thefp.com/p/where-does-benja…

A strong defense industrial base has implications well beyond national security. Today at @SenatorBanks's Defense Summit, I discussed how American leadership in emerging technology can support jobs, wages, and economic growth in Pennsylvania and in states across the country.
.@SenMcCormickPA: “Having a robust defense industrial base is great for our economy…by being the leader in AI, by being the leader in drones, by being the leader in robots, all of that capability is great for a robust economy.” “So, tie this to the economic well being in Indiana, in Pennsylvania, and all these other places…It’s good for our economy, it’s good for jobs, it’s good for wages.”

New poll: 76% of Ukrainians living in Ukraine believe that armed resistance to Russian aggression must continue, even if some of them have to spend some time without electricity, running water, or sewage services. Only 15% believe Ukraine should accept all of Russia’s demands to preserve these basic comforts, even if it means losing the war. Since August–September, despite all of Russia’s attacks, public attitudes have remained virtually unchanged. 80% believe Ukraine should continue striking Russia’s oil industry, despite US demands to unilaterally stop doing so and threats to suspend or restrict aid. Only 11% believe Ukraine should refrain from such strikes, even if Russia continues destroying civilian infrastructure. 63% are prepared to endure the war for as long as necessary, while 21% are willing to endure it for up to another six months. These attitudes have also remained virtually unchanged throughout the second half of 2026. 62% trust Zelenskyy as president, while 35% do not. kiis.com.ua/?lang=eng&cat=re…
