One of the most horrific tortures during the Ottoman period was that of the hooks or "tsigkelia", as the Muslim Turks called them. On the walls of cities or on specially erected scaffolds, large hooks with sharp, sharpened points were fixed. The naked victim, a Christian, was thrown onto the hooks from high up on the walls or was hoisted up with special pulleys and dropped onto the hooks of the scaffolds. There he remained impaled for days, tormented by terrible pains until he finally expired. If, moreover, the hooks had not pierced a vital organ, the torture could last several days.
Historical accounts mention the presence of such a scaffold with hooks in the central square of Heraklion (Candia), where many Cretans, mainly rebels, met their tragic end.
The Ottoman lords had a well-known proverb on their lips: "A head that does not bow falls." The execution of the sentence was carried out in public view by a specialized executioner called makelaris (a Greek-Byzantine word meaning "butcher"), with the well-known curved Ottoman sword, the yataghan. The victim arrived at the place of slaughter ridiculed and publicly shamed. Before the execution he had, as a rule, been beaten and often mutilated. The punishment itself was painless and instantaneous, but the entire preceding process made it agonizing. The body and head remained exposed for days. Often the victim's head was impaled on a pole and paraded through the city, especially if the victim happened to be an officially wanted person. Other times it was preserved and sent to the Sultan himself. Still other times the head remained hung or impaled in a prominent position for days, until the natural decomposition of its features began.
The torture of beheading was naturally also connected with the fate of the Four Martyrs who concern us in the present work. Indeed, the Synaxarion of the Saints confirms everything we have said so far. After harsh tortures and public humiliation through the streets of Rethymno, the Saints ended up in the square of the Great Gate, which today bears their name in their honor, to be beheaded.
Apart from the official executions, there were also the mass slaughters of Christian populations in cases where the Islamic-Ottoman state wanted to demonstrate its power. The main pretext for the massacres was reprisals against revolutionary movements. Alongside the official figures who were publicly executed (bishops, notables, etc.), unruly hordes of Janissaries would rush into Christian homes, break down doors, kill anyone they found in front of them, and then plunder the house, seizing whatever they liked. When leaving, in many cases they also set the house on fire.
Theochares Detorakis, in his "History of Crete", conveys a chilling piece of information. When they killed Bishop Gerasimos of Rethymno in 1821, they opened his chest, removed his heart, and sprinkled their banners with its blood in order to achieve victories against the infidels. The entire description of the incident directly evokes cannibalism from a primitive era.

Edward of Woodstock - the Black Prince - was born on 15th June 1330, the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. Created Prince of Wales in 1343, he became one of the outstanding English commanders of the Hundred Years’ War.
At just sixteen, Edward fought at the Battle of Crécy in 1346, where the outnumbered English army inflicted a devastating defeat upon the French. Ten years later, at Poitiers, he commanded another heavily outnumbered English force and won one of England’s greatest medieval victories, capturing King John II of France and much of the French nobility.
Edward later governed the English principality of Aquitaine and campaigned in Spain, winning another major victory at Nájera in 1367. However, the enormous expense of his wars, worsening illness and growing unrest in Aquitaine overshadowed his final years.
He married Joan of Kent and fathered the future Richard II. Edward died on 8 June 1376, one year before his father, and was buried in Canterbury Cathedral beneath one of England’s finest surviving medieval military effigies.

On 19th September 1356, Edward the Black Prince led his outnumbered English army to a crushing victory over the French at the Battle of Poitiers. Fighting from a strong defensive position, his longbowmen helped break repeated French attacks before King John II of France was captured.
Edward was not called “the Black Prince” because he was African American or because his ancestors arrived on the windrush, he was an English prince and the eldest son of King Edward III. The nickname was first recorded long after his death and is usually linked to his black shield or reputed black armour, although some historians associate it with the fearsome reputation he gained during his campaigns in France.

Allied Bomber Attacks German U-Boats Trying to Rescue Survivors
September 18, 1942
84 years ago today, French ships finally arrive to pickup the last remaining survivors of a sabotaged rescue operation.
Six days earlier on September 12, German U-Boats sank the British ship RMS Laconia. After discovering she carried Italian POWs and civilians, German commander Werner Hartenstein organized a rescue operation, broadcasting an uncoded appeal for help from any ships in the area including Allied ones. U-boat Commander Admiral Dönitz even authorized three additional U-boats to assist with rescue efforts.
Four days later on September 16, an American bomber spotted the rescue operation underway while bearing Red Cross flags and was ordered to attack anyway. Men, women and children on the U-boat decks and in the water were either killed or torn apart in front of the crews who had just pulled them from the sea. This forced the submarines to cut the life lines and dive. Those left behind drifted until they drowned or died of exposure. Of roughly 2,730 people aboard Laconia, about 1,650 died as a result from the attack.
In response, German Admiral Dönitz issues what will become known as the Laconia Order:
"No attempts should be taken to rescue crew members of sunken ships, recover swimming shipwrecked people, put them into lifeboats, lift overturned boats or give food and water. A rescue operation is opposed to the elementary principles of conducting the action to destroy enemy ships and crews. Be harsh. Remember that the enemy also does not show consideration for your wives and children during the bombing raids on German cities."
At Nuremberg the prosecution used Dönitz’s 1942 Laconia Order against him. However the charge was dropped after U.S Admiral Nimitz testified that Allied submarines had followed the same practice before Germany did. The war crime was brushed aside and no was held to account.
