In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our Department of Corrections is standing in solidarity with survivors and honoring the lives we’ve lost. 💜
This month, an Empty Chair was displayed in each division—a silent, powerful reminder of the individuals who should still be with us today, and a symbol of our commitment to raising awareness.
To turn that awareness into action, DOC staff hosted and participated in a Walk in Solidarity. Dressed in purple, our team walked to honor survivors, support those currently impacted, and remember those lost to domestic abuse. Together, we are breaking the silence.

🚨FUGITIVE FOUND🚨
A 38-year-old Dallas man wanted in Texas for felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is in custody following an investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. On Oct. 26, the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force contacted officers seeking assistance in locating German Medina-Gonazalez. Medina-Gonzalez had an arrest warrant issued early this month in connection with an Oct. 11 shooting in Irving, Texas and was believed to have left the state in a Porsche Macan.
On Oct. 28, officers located the Porsche in the 900 block of South Clark Street and learned that Medina-Gonzalez was registered guest at an apartment there that is used as a vacation rental. Officers found him in the apartment and took him into custody.
Medina-Gonzalez is currently in Cook County Jail awaiting extradition to Texas.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Let’s unpack this delivery to Cook County Jail that resulted in criminal charges.
On Oct. 13, while conducting a routine security search of a cargo van delivering printer paper to the Jail, correctional officers found a ghost gun with a loaded magazine. The Sheriff’s Office Department of Investigations and Intelligence were called to the scene and during their investigation recovered brass knuckles during a second search of the vehicle. All these items are illegal to bring into a jail. Investigators learned the contraband belonged to the driver, 64-year-old Jeffery Burks, of Chicago, and that he was denied a FOID. Later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges of bringing a firearm into a penal institution, bringing a weapon into a penal institution, and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon against him.
Burks was ordered released from custody on Oct. 14, following his first appearance hearing at George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 21-year-old man in custody at Cook County Jail on murder and aggravated vehicular hijacking cases is facing another felony charge after he was found in possession of drug-soaked paper.
On May 18, Correctional Staff observed Anthony Nunnally on overhead camera constantly reaching into his pants and tucking something away. Correctional pulled him aside and searched him. Inside of the crotch of Nunnally’s long johns, they found two small square pieces of saturated paper wrapped in a larger piece of paper. The paper pieces were collected and sent to the Illinois State Police Lab for testing. The pieces tested positive for a synthetic cannabinoid and buprenorphine. On Oct. 9, a Cook County Grand Jury indicted Nunnally on a Bringing a Controlled Substance in a Penal Institution charge.
Nunnally has been in Cook County Jail since October 2025.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Red Bull may give you wings but not in this case!
On Oct. 7, a shipment containing $300,000 of Red Bull was reported stolen from Joliet. The Sheriff’s Police Organized Retail Crime Unit, working with the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force, learned the stolen goods were likely at a warehouse in Bridgeview. On Oct. 26, Investigators went to the suspected location and found 11 pallets of Red Bull from the original stolen shipment. That’s more than 23,000 cans worth approximately $107,000.

Since 2023, our Victim Support Services (VSS) Unit has partnered with Uber to provide survivors with essential and reliable transportation.
Sometimes, this support means bringing life-saving items directly to a doorstep.
In one instance, a domestic violence situation left a family with young children in a severe financial crisis. VSS used Uber grocery delivery to keep the family fed while our team worked on a long-term plan: securing a government Link card, finding a walking-distance food pantry, and creating a sustainable grocery budget.
Thank you, Uber, for helping us protect, feed, and support vulnerable families and survivors in their time of need. 🙏✨

A 24-year-old man who Sheriff’s Police escorted off a Chicago Transit Authority bus for possessing suspect cannabis in plain sight is facing a felony after officers found him in illegal possession of a firearm.
At approximately 9:35 p.m. on Oct. 9, Sheriff’s Police saw Anthony Hicks, of Chicago, with cannabis on the bus in the 4900 block of Madison Street, which is in violation of CTA rules. A 28-year-old Chicago man is facing a felony gun charge after Sheriff’s Police found him in illegal possession of a loaded firearm during a traffic stop in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood.
At approximately 10:10 p.m. on Oct. 8, Sheriff’s Police Organized Crime Division Investigators saw a Black Ford Escape run a red light at the intersection of 85th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. The Ford eventually stopped at a parking lot in the 700 block of East 87th Street. When investigators spoke with the driver, they saw green plant material in and around the center console and smelled a strong odor of cannabis as well as the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. Investigators asked the driver and her four passengers out of the car to conduct a drug investigation. While patting down one of the passengers, Kendall Jennings, investigators found a firearm in his waistband and learned that he was denied a FOID. Jennings was taken into custody. The driver was cited for running the red light and another passenger was cited for the two empty bottles of Miller High Life investigators found in the backseat.
On the morning of Oct. 9, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Jennings with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. He appeared at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse later that day for his first appearance hearing, where he was ordered released from custody.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
