Sixty-one days in ICE detention. A college athlete whose attorney says she has no criminal history. Aminata Seck, a 26-year-old Kentucky State University basketball player from Senegal, was detained at Louisville’s airport on August 7 while traveling to an HBCU all-star game. She was released on October 7 after posting a $2,500 bond. DHS said Seck had overstayed her authorized stay. But a judge later found that she had not received sufficient notice of an immigration hearing, reopened her case and rescinded her deportation order. According to her attorney, the judge who granted bond also determined she was neither a danger to the community nor a flight risk. Her release matters. It does not erase two months spent in detention, and her immigration case is not over. We must challenge an immigration enforcement system that takes people’s freedom while they fight for a meaningful opportunity to be heard. Due process is a right, not a privilege.
